Chain probelems

ok here go's
A little while back i had some tyres fitted to my 1999 955i
the same time my speedo packed in.
while puttin my back wheel on he said ya chain is lose want me to sort it ?
i said yes please but he could not budge the plate that tightens the chain.
so he left it .

next day i did a 60mile ride to work and it was playing on my mind a bit so i popped in to a local garage where i was working.
the guy said it had seized he needed to take wheel of and strip it down and sort it £50.
as i was worried i said go for it.

One week later my chain was so lose u could pull it 5mm off the back of the sprocket.
(bare in mind the chain i have never changed and i have done 14000 miles in 4 months)

I tighten the chain every time i go out and always is lose again long rides and short rides i can still pull it 5mm off the back of the sprocket.
my first thought is need new chain and sprocket.
but if it was the chain stretching it should be about 10ft long by now or at least snapped.

im thinking that maybe the probelem is else where like when i adjust the wheel to tighten the chain is it possible to move back?

I have tightened the nut on the swing arm in case anybody ask!
im getting a new chain soon but i was just wondering if anybody is thinking the same as me or can a chain really stretch that much?

Hi,

Got a new chain and sprockets for mine the other day as the one that came with the bike was severly shagged by the previous owner. The pin I pushed out to split it was worn about 20 thou" (0.5mm) so over all those pins that equates to a lot of extra chain. The plates it goes through will also wear a similar amount so that doubles it. Then the rollers and sprocket faces will go a bit adding more. It is a whole lot better now but oddly enough, measuring the chain as in the Triumph manual, 21 pins gave a measurement just in limits. If in doubt strip the rear wheel assy and check everything for seizing and wear and also check there is nothing fouling the pinch on the swing arm and preventing it clamping up even when the bolt is tightened. At the end of the day you are putting 120 odd horsepower through that chain, it has got to be right!

ST3V0, In 60 miles I find it hard to believe that the chain can stretch that much. Try this, adjust the chain and mark the best you can where the adjuster is. Go for a ride and see if it has moved. I suspect something hasn't been installed or installed incorrectly in the hub.
