955i...weird noise
I've got an 02 955i with SSA and 15k. The bike hasn't been abused and it's been maintained.
I had a set of Shinko tires on there for about 2500 miles. Those wore out and recently put a set of BattleAxe tires and new front brakes.
Here's the problem. When I rev up through 4k-8k, I get a slowly mounting whooomp whooomp noise...it's not loud, but it's there. It probably makes 2 of the whooomp noises per second, doesn't seem to get faster when I accelerate but maybe it does when the motor and wind noise drown out the noise, not sure. When I let off the throttle, no noise. I'm not sure when it began...maybe I didn't notice it?
It's a long shot, but figured maybe someone else has experienced it. Otherwise I'm going to get it into the dealer next month. Only thing about the dealer that scares me is that they might hunt around replacing things and racking up a bill through process of elimination.
Any input it is greatly appreciated.

Chain?
Check your chain adjustment...sounds loose.

chronos27, Double check the re fitment of the front wheel, in particular the speedo drive and the brake calipers.

Did the tire shop use those beads for balancing. Or is the noise originating within the engine area? Also, could the fenders be too close to the tires?

My chain might be going, that might explain why it happens under throttle. I believe it's the original chain so it needs to be replaced anyway. I'll do that in a couple weeks when I have some extra money.

Seems like I notice the noise since they did the tires and brakes, so I'll check those...good idea on that and the speedo drive.

Do you mean beads inside the tire? I don't think so, I see new lead metal balancing squares on the rims.
I'm not sure if it's coming from the engine area. Actually that's a good point. I haven't tried just leaving it on the stand and revving it up through the range and see if I can still hear it. Can't believe I didn't think of that. At least that would eliminate the engine from the equation...I'll try that tonight.
Thanks for all the replies!!

Well, I narrowed it down. Not sure how I didn't miss it before...
The noise only happens in 5th gear. I guess I ride in 5th a lot because I didn't notice it only happening then.
Any input on what it might be? Since the other gears are fine I suppose it's safe to ride until I can get it into the shop. Even though I can't afford any repairs right now, maybe I'll get it in just so they can tell me what they think might be the problem and get an estimate.

chronos27, Check the chain's rubbing block for wear. Do you have a D(ual)SSA or a S(ingle)SSA? If dual sided, is the rear wheel misaligned or the chain too tight?
I may misunderstand, but the noise coincides with the tire and brake replacement? If so, rule out the transmission for now.

It's a single sided swingarm. I'll check those things and see what I find!

I had something similar on my 1999 955i.
the front mudguard had an extension on the back to protect rad grills ect and that had come lose.
only happened when i opened the throttle and was a continuous sound
it was driving me mad i wasn't sure if it was engine , fairings ect.
when i got home it was rubbing on the front wheel so i ripped it off
prob solved .
hope its a simple prob like mine all the best ST3V0

Everything seems ok from what I can tell, but once I shift into 5th the noise is immediately there, shift to 6th and it's gone. Gonna have to get it into the shop and let them listen to it. In the meantime, I avoid 5th.
