Battery problems.

2002 955i. i was out riding and it started freaking out. lights going dim and the cluster was going crazy. it only did this at and idle when i was cruising it was fine. well i stopped at a stop light and it just died. battery completly dead. wouldnt even light up the cluster with the key on. so i took it to my work and put it on the charger for about 45 min. then tested it. it said good battery with 215cca. so i put it back on till it said complete charge. took it home back in the bike. started once with a little struggle. let it run for about 20 min. shut it off. came back to leave for a ride and it almost started then completely died again. now wont do anything. battery is completely dead again. i played with the connections and nothing. and DEcosse after i charged it i just took it home and cranked it, no riding. sorry so long.

That is indicative that you have a charging failure - the symptoms describe exactly what happens - the dash starts going goofy and cutting off. Then the bike ends up dieing when you have drained the battery beyond the point of sustaining running.

You may have either R/R or Stator failure unfortunately - I would say to check fuse 2 first, but since you said it was worse at idle, then most likely you were getting something out of it, which more likely indicates one of the phases is down rather than fuse blown.

Go through the diagnostic guide in the S3 forum stickies to determine whether R/R or stator - or both!

Good Luck!!!

roggie955i, R/R is the regulator/rectifier.

Look at the diagnostic guide, DEcosse, alluded to for testing. You'll need a multimeter and also remove the tail fairing. You'll need to charge your battery prior to testing because you'll run the engine briefly without a charging circuit during the test.

You can get through quite a few of the tests while your battery is re-charging.

If you need a stator, you can get one from http://www.ricksmotorsportelectrics.com - about $150 or so.
Do the diagnostics before you fear the worst!
