Clunky gearchange

Hi Guys
I'm new to TriumphRat, and apart from a couple of shortish rides over the years, new to Hinkley Triumphs. I've just bought an 03 955i and after two days it already qualifies as my favourate bike.....Ever!. After 30 years of riding a vast array of bikes, this is praise indeed. However, what lets it down most is the gearchange, great care needs to be taken to avoid nasty clunking noises. The bike only has 2000 miles on it and hasn't been used in three years. Do these gearboxes get smoother with a few more miles on them? (unlike it's original owner, I bought it to ride, not polish). Chain slack is 30mm at the centre of the chain, which is marginally tighter than the book says. I've not owned a sssa bike before, but would if anything expect to make the problem worse by loosening the chain to 35-40mm of slack. Quite happy to be corrected on this point, any input gratefully received.

Brit in DC, Apparently Triumph has finally understood what many S3 and D955i owners already did. Original specs were too tight.

Gearbox is seemingly made to wear fit, yes, it'll become smoother. I don't know if more chain slack will help. Mine became markedly better after 5 K miles.

Brad, thanks for your knowledge and the link. I was riding it at the weekend with a shorty helmet as the full face I had ordered was yet to show up, a small matter that wasn't going to keep me off the bike. Full face showed up today, it's so long since I rode without one I'd forgotten how much noise they cut out. That, experimenting with chain tension and a few more miles getting familiar with it and I'm confident all will be fine.

As well as that they seem to enjoy regular oil changes.

I change mine in both my Sprint ST and my D 955 every 5,000kms.

cheers

I'll second that and add that it seems to shift even better with a full syn rather than a blend.
