Gas Smells & Related Issues

Purchased my 955i just over three weeks ago and I love her! May sell the 675 as it's too twitchy, uncomfortable and know where near as enjoyable as the 955i for me.

The day I brought the 955 home, it sprung a gas leak by way of one of the plastic gas fittings, I replaced with a factory plastic fitting which fixed the problem.

Last night the bike stalled at a stop light, So I filled up the tank and in case it was empty, it seemed to help and the bike run better but in only took 3.5 gallons. Just prior to the stall, it felt fuel starved while ridding.

Today I started the bike in the garage and I can smell a mild to strong order of gas, checked the fittings and all is dry.

Does anyone know of any other gas leaks connected to the 955?

One last issue, I can hear what sounds like large marbles rolling around in the air box when I take off from a start, once I'm up and running I know longer hear the noise.

Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

The only time my 955 ever stalled was when I cheaped out and put mid-grade gas in it. Now I run strictly 94 oct. But the 'stalling/fuel starvation/gas smell' could be other issues:
1. Really dirty air filter
2. Water in the fuel
3. Bad spark plug(s)
4. Fuel Filter(very good chance)
5. Air is being sucked into the fuel lines at the fittings.
6. Worst case: timing issues

The large marbles could either be: You are running on low octane gas, something is loose, or large marbles. I would definitely check the airbox and filter, because I'm sure you are using the highest octane possible.

Michael, What year is your D955i? I suggest a maintenance session for a newly arrived used motorcycle.

Hopefully the 'marble's' sound isn't preignition, which could hole a piston. Is it louder under load? Gas odor at cold start up isn't unusual, but it should be very mild and as the engine warms it should diminish. Poor spray pattern from one or more injectors can cause an over rich condition. The plugs will need to be pulled to determine if any of the cylinders are running rich and if the correct heat range plug is installed.

Oddly enough the drive chain's rubbing block, if worn, will make a rattling sound seemingly from the engine. Most noticed at decel.

It's a 2003 955i. I think that marble sound is consistant what something loose in the air box, it does not sound like a engine getting ready to go sound. I start using 87 octane so the bike would start easier, what I found was that the bike starts best with 89 octane.

Also the bike came with a Power Commander, it does run rich and soon as I can learn how to adjust the PC I will take some of the gas out of the lower rpm range.

Thanks for the suggestions, we are going to pull the tank and check out the air box at the same time, as soon as my brass fittings come in.

Michael, Minimum US octane rating is 89, in OEM tune. The PC may've made the timing more aggresive along with fueling changes. Anyway, I wouldn't run 87 octane.

I took her for a test ride tonight, only smell the gas oder at start up, the noise I hear does not sound like engine noise at all, sounds like something is loose in the carbs, even though the bike is carb-less. Seems to run perfect. I did fill up with 89 octane right after it died. Will move up to 91 as soon as I can.

I also noticed that is does have some back pressure noises coming from the exhaust, noting alarming. Still plan on puling the tank, changing out the brass fittings and installing a K&N filter, will check the fuel filter at the same time.

Does anyone know where the fuel filter is (inside the tank, outside the tank)? or how hard it is to get to and remove, I may of let a few plastic pieces in when I tried to remove the broken fitting.

Filter and Pump are on the inside of the tank. There is a valve on the inside of the airbox that may be making the noise you hear. When you put the airbox back together really realllly make sure the O-ring stays where it's supposed to. I didn't pay close attention the first time and didn't notice the o-ring sticking out until after the tank was back on

When you removed the tank the first time, make sure you got your breather tubes on the right way around, one of them goes to free air, but the other one goes to a small non return valve, which does not let air into the tank. If you get them wrong, your fuel pump will be working real hard trying to pump fuel. A symptom of this is that the fuel tank is difficult to open as you create a vacuum in the tank.

Other possibilities would be something loose in the tank itself, filter or other.

I bet there are nuts from squirrels in your airbox...and maybe a nice nest.

Clean it out and check all hoses.

Tank Breather Lines

I'm new to Triumph bikes and I just picked up a 02-955i. It only has one breather line connected to tank and other fitting is bare. Where should this hose(if were there) go. Note: it's the inside one.
