D12 Battery Problems

Hi there, I hope someone can help me. Ive got a 1993 D12, and am having some electrical problems. Ive had a new battery fitted after experiencing slugish starting, this hasnt improved the situation. The alternator is giving out over 14 volts, the battery shows 12.4 volts when its not under any load. On occasion the bike will not start at all, this can happen after a ride, or after being left all night. Its as if the battery is being discharged and is not holding any amps. Is the diode in the alternator supposed to prevent this? If so, can it be replaced as I dont want to replace the whole alternator when its not requirerd.
Is there any thing else that i should be checking?

Id appreciate any help with this problem as im at my wits end now.
Many thanks
John

I would be inclined to check all connections in the starter circuit, sounds more like the juice just isn't getting through.

Thanks for the reply, ive checked all the connections, and they are all OK. It seems to me like the battery is being drained and doesnt have enough amps to turn the bike over, even though its still giving out 12.4 Volts.

Is anything getting hot while you're trying to start it? I'm not sure if you have a regulator/rectifier/ground block, etc. What happens if you try to boost it with another vehicle? Does it start normally sometimes? I think the starter itself could be an issue.

That's all I can think of for now. The sun is coming up and it's time for me to go to bed.

battery problems

One thing I can think of:

Do you have an immobiliser of any sort? I had one, and had assurances that the load was nowhere near enough to drain battery. So put up with rubbish starting, if at all, whilst trying to find another fault.
Then got rid of immobiliser - perfect starting every time now.

Cheers
Rich
