loose gear lever

hi all, newbie sam here ! does anyone have any tips on tighteneing up a loose gear lever ( wobbling on the splined shaft ) ? i tried putting some aluminium baking foil round splines and then tightening pinch bolt, but after a 40 mile run it was loose again

Are the splines on the shaft or lever in good shape? On an old dirt bike, I had to file out the gap in the lever so that it could squeeze tighter because the splines were worn down, but eventually had to replace the shaft and lever. Hopefully your bike's shaft is in good shape.

Replace the lever bolt as it may be stretched. You can also squeeze the gap tighter ala drake...I would do both.

Pull the lever off and replace with a set of vice grips

Always worked on my old dirt bikes. Suppose you could find a used shifter. There was one on ebay:

If you still have the original T595 gearchange lever with the linkages and rose joints I suggest you bin it and get the single piece upgrade. It transforms the gear change from a sloppy affair to a positive one.

This is what you need. It fits directly onto the splined gearchange shaft and faces towards the footrest, thus doing away with all the links. You can buy from your local Triumph dealer or wait for one on ebay for a fraction of the cost.
If it is just a problem of getting a grip on the splines I have heard that if you slacken the pinch bolt and prise it open a bit then insert some pieces of broken needle and retighten it takes up the slack. Never tried it myself, but it sound reasonable.

thanks

thanks to all for the advice ! i have got it tight for now by running a hacksaw blade through the slit to open it out a bit which semed to tighten up enough to get a good grip, but the advice about the later version is what i needed to know and will be checking out ebay !

I did the same thing. I used to clamp a small pair of Vise Grips somewhere on the frame of my dirt bikes in case I broke a shfter.

You know, not to thread jack, but dirt bikes were always the exception to keeping it in the brand.

I had a Suzuki RM 125 that at one point had vice grip shifter, honda chain, Yamaha gears, and kawasaki bits in a number of places. You did what could to keep in running when the dealership never had the right parts
