Question Tank removal

I was reading with interest about installation of K&N air filter. I read that some drain the tank and are then able to get it sufficiently out of the way to change the filter. I bought a scottoiler for my '02, everything is installed apart from the vacuum hose. Scottoiler have detailed instructions (photos) but they show the tank and airbox removed. Is there a way of moving the tank so I can get the vacuum hose installed without removing the tank completely from the bike? If not, does anyone have a method of removing/replacing the tank reliably. I would rather do it my self than be charged hours of labour at the mechanics workshop.

What is the issue with removing the tank completely?
There are dry-break disconnects on the hose connections, so when you unplug them they (should!) seal.

No issue at all, last time I tried I kinda gave up at the sight of the fuel lines. I need to investigate further... Bought a Haynes manual to get some pictorial help. Not an urgent thing as I am 3000 miles away at work

If in doubt, get your digital camera and take close up photos before you pull everything apart. Get some masking tape and label hoses and cables etc so that you know where they go back on.
Quite simple really. Cheers, Nev.

Great idea! Sort of make my own manual as I go...

Thx for the idea.

It really isn't to bad taking it all apart. Take your time and it'll be easy. The worst thing to me is the airbox on the intakes of the throttle bodies. Sometimes it's difficult getting a proper seal, but I doubt you have to go that far. If in doubt just mark everything with masking tape and marker as you disassemble. IE: A goes to A, B to B, C to C etc, etc.

TT

The next time I pull my tank off, I'll take pics to show you. It's really easy, and once you pull it up just turn it 90° to the right and set it back down, it fits back in the hole. (best if done while near empty)

Jollybox, Here's a couple of hints. Wait until the low fuel lamp lights. There are six connections to the tank. Two are electrical (fuel pump and fuel level) and they can't be connected incorrectly. There are two small hoses on the LHS, the H2O drain and vent which go to the fuel door. Mark one spot on the tank and one hose with a dot of nail polish (thanks to my daughters for that). The other two connections are the dry (sometimes) break fuel lines. Mark one with nail polish, push in on the male fitting, push the release on the female fitting and pull the male fitting straight out.

Have a large container handy if the dry breaks aren't so dry. I use my oil change pan. When reinstalling the dry breaks, first put a smear of grease or oil around the O ring, press the release and install straight in, release the release button and check that the male won't come out. Functionally it doesn't matter which way they're connected, but they dress better when done properly.

TT, I learned with my '98 that the hose clamps need to be opened a few more turns prior to installation...even if the airbox comes off easily. For some reason my '04 isn't ever a problem.

Thanks for the advice BradTx, the nail polish idea is great! As soon as I get back home I'll try all the advice given here. Sure beats taking it to the shop
