I'm curious...why would someone buy a Daytona 955i instead of a Speed Triple and vice versa? I "seem" to hear a lot more rave about the Speed Triple than the Daytona. What does one apparently do better than the other and/or what are the major differences aside from price?
thanks

I've got an 03 S3 and can say there are a LOT of similarities between the two bikes, and also some major differences.
The S3 is tuned for torque and has some different engine components. I think the Daytona has forged pistons and such, while the S3 does not?
S3 obviously has no fairing but the frame and just about everything else but the engine and top triple clamp are the same mechanically and even in appearance. So, you can pretty much order any S3/Daytona part and expect them to fit (at least for the 02-04 models).
Correct me if I'm wrong...
Sometimes I wish I had a Daytona just for the option of having a fairing or not, but I love my S3. I'll just have to keep experimenting with the english wheel to get a good bikini fairing fabbed up.

I currently have a 03 triple that i have had for just over a year and I have put almost 13,000 miles on it and love it!! The only draw back is the lack of fairing. I can do a 200 mile day and no problems, but much more than that the wind starts taking it toll on you. In fact I am think about trading my triple in for a left over 04 Daytona my dealer has. I started my Triumph riding on a 00 RS and just sold it last fall to a good friend of mine because I found my self riding the triple more because of the better suspension and motor. That is why I am leaning towards the Daytona...
Just my 2 cents
Mike

"Corners" you made the right choice. Before I bought my D955i ('02), I test rode a Speed Triple and D600 at the dealer. They were both "okay", but then I tried a D995i and was completely blown away. The latter was more more spirited to ride and produces what can only be described as a MAGNIFICENT "howling" induction sound at full bore.
The S3, though it shares the same engine, just not nearly as highly tuned, does NOT make the same awesome howling sound as the full faired 955i Daytona. It is for this reason alone, that I decided in favor of the D955i as the bike of choice.
IMO, the extra grand for the D955i is well worth the price of admission for an "E" ticket ride.

The Daytona has a bit more hp and will handle in the twisties much better. The sportbike rider will also prefer the riding position.
It of course boils down to personal taste. But the performance advantage of the Daytona will be significant in comparison to the same year S3.
Pure sportbike guys usually prefer the Japanese offerings in the world of pure performance. That's why there are more raves about the S3. But the Daytona is an amazing road bike that, in the right hands, can hang with any Eastern offering!

Judging by your other bikes, you would enjoy the S3 over the Daytona.

Lots of little reasons really. Things like geometry subtleties. Narrow clip ons and higher rearsets. The engine spins up to a higher redline easier, and has a much better lean clearence. The extra horsepower is nice for making up for little mistakes here and there! Also the wind protection is critical above 130 or 140.
Oh yeah, it LOOKS cooler too! :-)
