Invite to a party, but...

Hey guys:

Here's a question. If you were invited to a party, would you come to the host's home and then invite their other guests to your own party? That would be kinda rude to the host.

We are trying to build a great site here. Lets keep it great. Of course other sites exist, but please don't use this site to promote them. If anything can be posted elsewhere it can be posted here.

It's also against the AUP 3.3 "Posting with the intent to recruit members to other online communities."

From now on any links will be deleted. But that shouldn't have to happen if normal courtesy and manners are followed.

It all depends on the party, if the host is friendly and open, of course that would never happen. If the host and his aids are the opposite I think many people at that party would say to one another : let's go to the other party,it's not nice here.

Of course this demands an example:
Imagine a few friends on one side of the party having a conversation about general stuff interesting to them.
One of the party aids passes by and overhears the conversation. The rest of the party is talking about other stuff and do not mind this little group of men talking but the aid thinks the conversation should be heard by everyone. So he ask the men to move to the center of the party and speak up a little so everybody can join the conversation.

The little group thinks this is rude and very strange.

Does this restriction also go for other sites that might be of interest like the motorcycle news forums or similar motorbike forums or is it just a censorship on our particular hobby and motorbike brand?

First - it's not censorship. It's an agreement that WE ALL SIGNED when we became members of this forum.

Second: the agreement stands for invites to ANY forum ("other online communities") - even the flat earth society!

Third: it's not personal.

BTW I have turned a blind eye to this rule for a while, so no complaints please, but have recently begun seeing "all the good stuff goes here first LINKY" posts, which seems to me to be bad manners. So now I am enforcing a rule which we agreed to.

Now from experience there's a couple of ways this can go: individuals can go to another site, get all inflamed and talk about censorship etc., and then come back do things over here in order to get some kind of wrist slap, so they can go back over "there" wherever, and say I told you so, the mods are barstewards.

Or we can all just get along. No name calling. No histrionics etc. Behave like a bunch of adults, and just carry on.

Well, far be it for me to be the one who supports the status quo...but I have to support Haggis in this. It really is standard forum courtesy, and I had noticed several threads in the past that were really on the edge of this that were allowed to proceed anyway without restriction. In previous experiences on other forums I have seen this kind of thing (the referring back and forth, not the restricting) get awkward and out of hand with not just duplicate postings or cross-linkings but it can get to the point you have read everything on both forums to follow a thread. It gets cumbersome and wastes bandwidth. Or it can, anyway.

Just so I don't seem like a total suck-up I'd like to say that I don't think the fine print we signed without reading is worth anything *grin*...but I do think the spirit of the law is appropriate, and on balance, has been applied judiciously.
John

PS it feels really creepy to be so agreeable *shiver*
