Hey all. I'm considering going to an America, but I'm coming from a Speed Triple. While I know it's ludicrous to expect anywhere near the cornering characteristics of the America, are any of you dragging your exhausts on corners? If so, does Triumph or anyone else make an exhaust that mounts higher up like the Scrambler or Bonnie?
I had the original exhaust for a few weeks, and took some sharp turns, and a round about, and never once scraped pegs or exhaust. I changed over to the trident exhaust for the sound, helps with letting people know your there.
When I took my slant cut TORs off there was a minor scrape at the end of one of the mufflers. The foot pegs start dragging long before the mufflers. Most any muffler that isn't extremely long or of massive diameter is not likely to have any ground clearance issues.
Thanks Matty and Gent. Do either of you know whether a high-mount exhaust exists for the America? Admittedly, there aren't many twisties where I live, but the added sense of security when I DO have to take them sure would increase my confidence in turns. I may even go as far as raising the height for increased clearance so as not to scrape her lady bits.
Don't think there is anything in the market place. Someone here or more likely over on the BonnevilleAmerica site had fitted high pipes. That was several years ago. I think Scrambler headers were used. Don't know if a hanger bracket for the muffler was fabbed or if they welded an attachment point to the frame. The right side body panel was not in place, they had removed the air box and fitted pod filters. Don't think is really practical to install high pipes without making lots of changes.
Hey Loaded you aren't going to have any problems with dragging the pipes. I drag pegs quite a bit and never had a problem with the pipes. I do have the BC Bombers but they are almost the same diameter as the stock ones. Actually you would probably drag the kick stand before the pipes. As for high pipes you would most likely have to get them custom made ,
I'm with Matty and Chris - You will have to grind off the rub nuts and part of the footpeg before you'll hit anything else. I sometimes hit the rub nuts, which always shocks the hell out of me, but nothing else ever touches the road. I once rolled it over on myself at a gas stop and nothing touched the pipes!! My pride got crushed, but not the pipes. Don't you think the bike would look awful with side pipes on it??
There are no high pipes for the America in the market that I know of - there is no where really for them to go and as many have said, pegs get to the ground first
