I agree with Findlay13, try them and see which works better for you. My experience was just the opposite of his, went out looking for an America and ended up buying a Speedmaster. I'm 6' 3" and a Speedy just fit me better. Plus I liked the blacked out look in person better. Either way they're both great bikes.

I tried them both, liked the riding position of both to be honest but ended up getting an America with all the chrome..... more bling for your bucks!
If the chrome goes crappy then i can always get it re-chromed or get it coated black, will look like a Speedmaster then anyway.

See which fits you best then try & get as newer machine as you can for your money or whichever has the most extra goodies on it. That way its less you will need to spend out in upgrades or if you prefer standard then sell on the upgrades to recoup some cash back.... Simples!

I'd go for EFI. Chrome can easily be added or removed.

Well it looks like the 2008 America is the winner. We will pick it up this week.
But it has carb's not FI. I remember seeing a choke.
Still looking at what exhaust to put on it. I have been looking at D&D. I have a Harley and they have a good reputation for building a quality system for them.

i believe 2009 was the year that the EFI was applied. I have a 2010 America that has EFI & a choke. when i bought mine i was looking at the speedmaster as well. the america just felt right for me.

I just got Stainless Ride pipes (http://www.stainlessride.com/) installed on my Speedmaster last week. They sound great -- just the right amount of rumble - and the performance improvement was immediately noticeable -- I couldn't even get to third gear on my ride home from the dealer. I will be posting a video/audio clip of the new sound in the next day or so.
