Yea, seriously...its good that you're OK.

So they are going to give you $6500 and then charge you how much to buy it back?

I think he said the damages were $6,500. The book on the bike may be worth more than that.

More than likely the bike is worth less than that IMO.

Bought a 2004 Speedy in good condition 3 years ago for 3,900. Had 12,500 miles on it.

i decided...sort of...

update....

i decided to let the bike go and take the money. the insurance company gave me $6700 for the bike and all the upgrades done. looking for another Triumph now but only have $4000 left after some other financial issues that i had to deal with. i looked at the local dealer and he has 3 nice used bikes i liked...2 tbirds and a newer speedy. i'm pretty the tbirds are not affordable to me despite my yearning to own one. the speedie is a much cheaper way to go but the lack of power compared to the tbird is a real concern of mine. my first was carbed and i did a fair amount of mods to increase power but at 6'4" and 250 lbs with an occasional passenger ( my son who's 6"0" and 260 lbs), we just are too big for that size bike. i know my son won't be on the next one as much simply because he's almost 17 now and would rather ride next to me if he could.
my dilemma is that with choosing this speedie over the tbirds(which, again, i can't really afford) is the fact that it's efi not carb and i will need more dealer involvement in making it mine. i did all the work myself on the last one. i guess i'm just not sure which way to go with this... either with the tbird happy and in drowning debt or just ok and within budget. i posted about the proposed deal on one of the tbirds on the tbird forum here and it's only an ok deal it seems. the only thing i know for is iwant another bike and want it to be a Triumph.

Simple solution:

1) Win the lottery
2) Buy the T-Bird for yourself
3) Buy the Speedmaster for your son

I'm no mechanic to give advice on whether a motorcycle is safe to rebuild, but I'm sure they are. If you need parts, I found a great m/c graveyard. They have probably more than 1,000 bikes there for parts. I've bought parts for my '99 Legend from him, and he sure is honest. I bought two headlight brackets and paid for them. He called me and explained that he discovered one of them was broken and refunded my money. If you want to check it out, here's the website: http://www.autocyclers.com/ Good luck

From an 'outside the box' perspective, if the Tbird is going to drown you in debt.....it should not be an option. It will end up becoming a 'grudge purchase' and you won't enjoy it as much as you should. As you said, your son will be wanting a bike of his own soon so i wouldn't worry about having to ride 2 up too much. Again, with an EFI version there are a number of mods which you can do yourself without needing to involve your dealer. Alternatively you can probably find a great carb version and be left with a few bob in your pocket.
