G'day guys,

whilst test riding a couple of bikes the other day I noticed a huge difference in the sound that came from both.

Apparently the America I rode came with short slash cut pipes, whilst the Speedy had long pipes.

The America was the most horrible annoying sound I'd heard - to the point I wanted to jump off it and leave it on the side of the road, whilst the Speedy sounded fantastic. It sounded very good at idle and on accelleration, but cruising it quietened right dow.

Is this the case normally, or did that America just have a crappy, noisy exhaust? It was a barking sound which was good at first, but just a drone over the whole trip. I hated. it. The dealer just told me that was the only difference between the 2.

Just to confirm, these are the Triumph Accessory High Flow Chrome Silencers....the speedy apparently had the "long" ones.

Long TORs sound great...quite deep and throaty...just beware of the drone on long rides...you might at times wish you had the stock ones back

Thanks for the reply. It's funny you mention this - I almost took my bike back and had the originals put back on.

I tried researching about what long and short pipes were like, and the general concensus was that the longer ones were a little quieter, and I thought I'd like that.

They certainly have a bit of a bark, but it seems to me they are noisier to the rider.

I have since decided to keep them - they cost too much to take off and resell. My advice to anyone looking at TORS is to find a bike that has them on and make certain they are exactly what you want. I thought I did the right thing in this regard, but the information about exactly what exhausts were on certain test bikes was a little "ambiguous".

I think I'll get used to the long TORs, but they are certainly a little annoying to "me" the rider. A bit of a constant drone. They sound a hell of a lot meaner than the standard exhaust though. Anyone that says they're barely noisier than the standard pipes...well.....God only knows how loud they want their bikes to sound. The TORs definitely add a distinct "bark".

Anyone considering them I'd be happy to share my thoughts further.

I fitted long TORS to my 07 America, on idle they sound very meaty & proper grunty throughout the rev range.... So much better than the standard pipes which made it sound like a 250cc sewing machine!

Yes the noise can drone on a bit at a constant cruising speed but if you have a decent fitting helmet & pop in some ear plugs then you hardly notice a thing.

Ive always had loud exhausts on my sportsbikes so havent really found them that offensive to be honest, unlike the neighbours in my street! Lol.

At the end of the day, its different strokes for different folks!

Funny, with the short TORs on my 08 Speedmaster, I can barely hear my pipes at all at 60mph, and I removed the washer in the inlets to deepen the tone. I'm happy as pie with mine.

I should add that I have MIVV carbon fiber cans on my 08 Street Triple, no db killers, and even with ear plugs the drone gets to me. But, its the full face helmet that amplifies that sound, it's tolerable when you try it without a helmet.

I fitted the short TORs to mine in April 09. By April 13 they will have rotted through from the inside, very very disappointed. I wont be buying another set, I'll just buy a pair of cheap generic 15" turnouts from ebay.

I fitted long TORS to my 09 America, on idle they sound very meaty but at higher RPMS they sounded more like annoying trumpets "blating" away... loudly. The low frequency rumble I was hoping for did not exist.

I stuffed stainless steel wool into the inlet end of the pipes and the sound was more agreeable. Unfortunately the wool would blow out every 2 months.

After 6 months I went back to the stock pipes with modifications. Drilled out the final baffle and drilled a 1/2" hole down the center of the catalytic converter. This seems to work for me. .. neighborhood friendly with a nice growl when accelerating at full throttle. I have 6 mo. old TORs which I am willing to sell at a good proce :-).

I actually think I'm getting slightly better fuel economy.

I almost always get around 20 km per litre.
