how to remove fork shroud 07 TBA

Hi fellow riders, one of my upper fork shrouds has a dent in it, I want to remove it and tap out the dent. What is the best way to do this? It looks like I could loosen the triple clamps, undo brake caliper and speedo cable, and lower both forks at once and not have to remove the axle, wheel and fender? Or should I remove the wheel and fender and only lower the one fork (brake side) to remove the dented shroud?

Thanks!

-James

If it were me, I'd jack up the bike and remove the wheel, fender, brake caliper and slide the fork tube out of the tree leaving the good side in place. Leaving the wheel attached would be really hard to handle without a helper.

How about pulling the jesus nut and taking the top clamp off, leaving the bottom clamp alone? Been about a year and a half since I pulled my front end apart, but memory seems to think it'd be that simple(assuming you have a socket big enough). If you do try this way, use masking tape to protect the finish of the top clamp from the socket. I've got a lovely polished crescent moon around the nut on my top clamp.

Thank you both for the tips.

Verde, I think I'll try what you suggested, I hadn't seen that angle so I'm glad I asked. I have large sockets and torque wrench but don't have the wrenches to remove the axle yet, so this way I can leave the wheel in place. Also, I won't need to be concerned about getting the forks back to the same position if I don't loosen the lower clamp. When I get at this, I'll update how it worked. A Haynes manual is in the mail to me so just waiting to have the torque specs available.

Regards, -James

Update... I finally got around to doing this. Verdes suggestion worked great, very simple to do and the fork cover just slides right off. I pulled out the speedo cable guide on the fender to give a little extra length for lifting the handlebar up, otherwise just as described, remove steering stem nut - loosen both top clamps - lift handlebar. Thanks again!
