Tacho

I am getting a tacho for my America. Is it easy to fit?
I have heard conflicting stories as to whether the tank has to be removed to get at the wiring.

Cheers

On my 08 America, just lifted the dash and the connectors were there. On the older bikes, dont know what years, you had to add the wireing loom that is supplied with the kit. If the connectors are under the dash, no need to lift the tank.

gmike said it - depend son that year of your bike

the triumph tacho kit does have everything in the box to attach it to any America so you might find cables and wires in the box that may confuse you but you won't actually need

the 08/09 America already comes with all the wiring under the dash, ready for either the clock or tacho accessory. so you literally unscrew the dash, find the connector that fits the connector on the end of the wire haging out of the tacho and plug it in. job is then done

they include in the box another wire cluster, which would require you to take out the old cluster and reattach the new one - making sure you have to take out all the idiot light connections etc. i can't remember the age of bike that would require this

lastly in the box is a cable that would power the tacho mechanically instead of electronically - so you'd have a fat cable coming out in the same fashion as the speedo. I'm assuming this would be the oldest Americas. As far as I'm aware though even this doesn't actually require tank removal

sorry for all the info, half of which probably won't be necessary, but if anyone else was in the same position and couldn't decide then there we go

Tacho

The bikes a 2009 so it sounds simple enough for a dumbo like me to sort. (Dealer told me the tank would have to come off, that's what's called "marketing" I suppose)

Thanks for the advice

2009 america:

undo the allen bolts holding the dash down, pull it to one side, pop the triumph plastic badge out, slide the tacho wire through the hole, plug it into the connector (there's only one that will fit) attach the tacho to the little plastic bracket underneath, line it up so its straight, put the dash back over the holes, screw the allen screws back in, job done

for ease of use you can take the whole dash off by unclipping the wire cluster. makes things a little easier

definitely don't need to take the whole tank off. unless he was meaning take the tank console off, or take the dash off the tank. don't know. but yeah its very simple and you can do it no worries

sounds more to me like the dealer trying to get you to take it in so he can fit it in 5 mins and charge you an hours labour :P
