Fuel System Problem 07 Carb model

Hi guys,

Riding an 07 with carbs that aren't getting any fuel. Fuel is coming out of the tap fine however the starter motor is just turning and turning but not drawing fuel into the carb floats. I can crank it with the float chamber drains completely open and there's not even a dribble.

I'm a novice at this so am learning as I go. Has anyone experienced a similar issue and if so did it get resolved?

Cheers

Chris

Presuming the petcock is open, it could be anything from a pinched vent hose (remove tank to check that vent hose isn't pinched or kinked), clogged hidden filter, or other line obstruction.

I doubt that it is a float valve issue, as neither carb is getting fuel, correct?

How many miles are on the bike?

carb

Hi, thanks for the quick response.

Correct - neither carb is getting fuel.

The bikes done 3500 miles and has been standing for about 2 weeks. First time back on her after being left she started but was idling extremely coldly and any adjustment to the choke or throttle made it even rougher until it cut and wouldn't start again.

I've had the tank off completely and played about with some things but without experience or a haynes to fall back on I'm a bit of a newbie. There was a lead running from a black plastic thing (about the size of a shotgun shell with a sliding valve inside) which at first seemed clogged so i forced some air through and reattached it. It lead back up to the top of the fuel tank so wasn't sure if thats something to do with the vacuum hose? There were only two hoses connecting the fuel tank to the bike, the fuel line from the tap and this one.

All the other various lines and hoses seemed ok. Difficult to tell with the fuel line as I think without the engine running there's something blocking this intentionally (RAC guy also thought this).

I had thought of checking any fuel filters i could find. The fuel line appears to run straight into the carb jungle however so not sure if the filter is built in (is that what you meant by hidden?) If so - is this a simple enough job as it looks pretty hard to get to.

As I've said I'm new to this, I'm happy to get my hands dirty and am happy to have a go but am beginning to feel I may have to shell out and take it to Bridge in Exeter to get it fixed. Please tell me if I'm being a wimp and taking the whole lot apart is safe for a novice.

Cheers

Chris

Could there be moisture in line that froze and is stopping fuel flow?

The hidden filter is at the base of the tee between the carbs. Given the low mileage I doubt that is the issue, however one never knows until it has been checked & eliminated as a cause.

Wires

One thing the RAC guy mentioned was the two wires that connect to the carb set up right next to the bowls on each carb. He said they weren't getting any current but had no idea what they were for and if it was important.

I wasn't aware the 07 had any management but cant be sure, I plan on buying a haynes manual tomorrow but do you guys know if this is something to worry about?

Cheers

The bayonet connectors near the carb bowls are for the carb heaters.

The TPS is mounted on the right (throttle) side of the right carb body. there is an in-line connector (disconnect) between the carb bodies.

Neither of the above has anything to do with the fuel issue.

Have you tried and opening the drains on the bowls of the carbs to see if there is any fuel in them ?

A quick google search for "Triumph America carb removal" brings up this old gem.

http://www.dinqua.com/Triumph/carbs1.html

That should get you past not having a Haynes manual for the moment.

Sounds like you've covered a lot of the checks. Once you know fuel will flow out of the petcock but there's nothing in the float bowl, you've only got a few inches of path way for the fuel that you need to check. If that filter mentioned earlier looks fine then I'd pull the carbs off and try to clean out the fuel delivery passages.
