Removing front fender

i am thinking about removing the front fender from my 08 Speedmaster. it is a cheap and easy mod (i hope) and having seen a few photos of bikes without the front fender it looks pretty cool.

has anyone had any experience with this and any tips on how to do this or to not do it? there is a brake cable that is currently held in place on the fender and im worried if this will run the risk of damage if it doesn't have the fender there.

thanks

My brake cable stays out of the way of the tire just fine, but i dunno about the stock one. You can use a cable clamp at the bolt for the lower fork shroud to hold the cable out of the way if you're worried about it. Just be sure to allow enough slack for fork travel.

If it's your main form of transportation, you will regret this mod every time you cross a puddle... particularly if it's caused by a golf course that's using gray water. Washing all the road grease out of my beard after a good drizzle sucks. I don't regret it enough yet to throw a stock fender back on but I also haven't shaved the fork legs yet... we'll see what evolves.

thanks for the update on this, will have a look at doing it over the weekend.

did you need to remove the front wheel to remove the fender?

any photos of your bike with it removed?

thanks

I know I didn't take the front wheel off to remove the fender. I do remember it was a squeeze though because of the way the fender slightly bulges around the legs, so you do risk scuffing it if you're not careful. It's just 4 bolts (10mm heads maybe?) and the cable holders you gotta release, then "roll" the fender around to the front of the wheel and pull it off. Since the bolts are on the inside edge of the legs you may choose to approach them from the back side, relative to the bolts, so make sure you get it straight in your head which way to turn them.

Not to pee on your parade but it's actually illegal to run with not front fender here in the UK. Bloody annoying as it looks great

No front fender looks cool, no question about it. I would have put up with a little road water in the face but I just can't get myself to remove the brace and don't like the look with it so I kept the fender too.

Good point. That's another thing you could consider, ryancoleuk. Look at mike's bike here with the brace still on. Maybe you can convince the bad guys that that's enough of a fender... and you know you're not adversely affecting handling.
