HELP. Small oil leak

Fellow Rats

My 07 America, has finally rolled over 7000 mi. and I have a small oil leak comming from what appears to be the gasket between the cylinder head and the valve cover. I am curious to know if anybody else has had this happen and is it possible to change the gasket without too much of a headache.

Thanks

It's not difficult. Tank off plus remove SAIS control valve with hoses and pipes if fitted, and then after removing the fasteners it's fiddly to manoeuvre the cover out of the way. Use a new rubber gasket and the most inportant thing is to ensure you torque down to the correct spec, DO NOT over tighten or your world may end before 2012. 10nm, 7.37561ft/lb.
The 0.00001ft/lb is the clincher.

I had a T100 that leaked like that. Before struggling to get the cover off and replace the rubber gasket it might be worth checking the bolts are torqued up enough. Mine weren't. Tightening them to the right torque stopped the leak permanently.

Alternatively you could view the oil leak as an optional extra - making your bike more retro and authentic! See it as a badge of honour?

Eagle...I was having that same exact thought also because its only on one side of the engine.

John...Thanks for the insight. I already have a new gasket, so will give that a go, Thanks mate, Cheers!

Unless damaged you can probably reuse the gasket BUT you should change the rubber washers that actually provide the pressure for sealing the cover. The bolts do not tighten, they bottom out.

Mine were only hand tight - must have been a Friday special!
