wet weather cut out
After riding my 07 speedmaster for two years and 21,000 trouble free km's on a recent trip to Philip Island I had my first problem with the bike. After riding all day in constant rain the bikecut out, only to restart 5 minutes later. On the next day, this occured twice until the weather cleared and it then ran perfectly. Fuel bowls were checked, but were all right. Has this happened to anybody else and if so, what was the problem?

Had the same thing happen to me a couple of times, only seems to happen on long runs in particularly rainy days, and if the tank is near empty. Keeping the fuel topped up seems to alleviate the problem.

You probably have an issue with water getting into one of the critical connections. Purchase a tube of dielectric grease and begin pulling every connector apart and packing it with grease both inside and the backside of the connection. Check the side stand switch closely, the coil wire connections, primary and secondary, ignition switch, headlight bucket wires. Make sure the ignitor unit is dry also.

One other thing that can cause this is your gas tank vent tube. It hangs out the bottem on the shift side, just below the front of the battery. That tube needs to be cut at an 45 deg angle, back to front. As I understand it, if it is left with the flush cut it can plug up with water and grime causing your tank to not vent, especially in wet conditions. It hasnt happened to me, but I have heard of others having this problem and have cut mine.
Hope it is as simple as this.
Mike

If it only happens in wet weather it is almost definitely an electrical problem. Try what Gregger says, that is good info. If it still happens look for a broken wire or one that has the plastic sheath damaged as water will cause it to short out. Look in the areas of the bike that are wet, I had a broken wire under the fuel tank that shorted out in rain. The front wheel was spraying water up there....
A trick I found by accident is to look for the problem in the dark, small sparks ar easy to see.
Good luck.

The side stand switch has been known to cause this when riding in wet weather

Thanks for that Mike. I knew it was a fuel issue (for me anyway ) just couldn't figure out what was causing it.

I ride in Scotland so if there was a common problem with cutting out in wet weather, believe me, I'd know about it

I've experienced the same sort of issues with my 07 Speedmaster pretty much from day 1. The first time out in the rain it died. It was kind of cold as well as wet and I was revving the motor quite a bit at stops, so I figured I had flooded it. That was sort of confirmed when I pulled the choke out and pushed the starter button until it caught. Some months later, same thing. Riding in the rain and the motor just died. After some choice words and a bunch of button pushing, it caught and ran fine. No real problems for about a year or so until I rode across Ohio in what was left of a hurricaine. Then it acted like the side stand was down even though I had bypassed that switch a long time before. It was still on warranty and I had the dealer fix it. They couldn't find a specific cause, but were able to document the problem. They "fixed" it by cleaning some contacts in the ignition switch circuit.
The it came back to haunt me again. We've narrowed it down to the diode pack (#34 on your handy-dandy wiring diagram). The problem now is Triumph USA says that can't be the problem and if it is, they say replace the wiring harness.
Yabadabadoo!

Thanks for the feedback. However there is a potential that I may not be able to test any of these ideas for a while. We are coming up to summer here in oz and living in south Australia (the driest state in the driest continent in the world or so they reckon) there is a good chance that I may not get caught in the rain for a while. It is not unusal for it to go Jan and Feb without it raining once and it is currently 38 degrees outside at the moment and it is only the second week of november (summer doesnt officially start until dec).
