America or Speedmaster.
Hello Forum,
Going to start riding again after 30 years,I was looking on the Triumph web-site at the America and Speedmaster very nice bikes. There does not seem to be much differance in these two bikes. Is it just down to personal choice. My old triumph bike was not that relieble back in the 70's what are they like now.

Personal choice is spot on, I have had both and prefer the Speedy as I am a fairly aggressive rider and the set up suits me better.
As far as reliability, on my two bikes I have racked up over 90,000kms without a failure apart from a flat tyre and dead battery.
And guess what? no oil leaks at all, not even a weep, I have never needed to top up the oil.
enjoy......Binnsy

Hello Badcompany - I have a 2009 America and love it! You can't go wrong with either, and I went from the America to the Speedmaster, back again, etc. until I went with the fit (for me) of the America. From my short experience, and what I have read and heard, the Triumphs today are now known for their reliability. I was very impressed with the power and handling when I test rode my America, and had recently tested a 1200 Sportster, and the America was better in many respects IMO (although I still do like the Sporties, esp. the Nightster ).

Can't speak from personal experience on the yamaha or the suzuki, but did a fair amount of research before I got my bike in the early spring. The speedy/america are got high marks for reliability and handling. That is why I went with the speedy. I also liked the dual front discs, tach and blacked out engine. I did feel that the handlebars were a bit low and got some 2" risers. Have had 2000 problem free miles. I have heard of one bike with well over 100k. Seems like some of the biggest problems with the bike are the cdi units can sometimes fail for no apparent reason and sometimes they don't like the rain. Dielectric grease on the connectors seems to fix the rain problem.

I had an 06 America I loved it and it was a great bike but I soon felt the urge and I bought an 07 r3 and I don't see myself getting rid of it anytime soon. If I had the money I would buy another America bike I do miss it at times.

So...what is the difference?
I just looked at both bikes and am still scratching my head. What is the difference between the America and the speedmaster? Do they come with different engines or is it only trim? I guess if I saw them side by each it would probably jump out at me. Anyway, these are very cool bikes. I especially like the way they look with a solo seat and white walls.

It would be worth test riding the new Thunderbird too. The handling is fantastic and the bigger engine offers more choices; cruise on a cruiser, twist through the twisties, blast those straights.
And get ABS for that extra reassurance after thirty bikeless years.

fishinhook, the only differences are the seats (Gunslinger style on the Speedmaster, solo with touring pillion on the America), the Speedmaster has dual disks up front whereas the America is a single, and the Speedmaster is more blacked out, while the America is more chromed out. The engines are the same.
