right control (rear brake) locator pin

I bought a used 2005 Triumph America. The bike has floorboards (which I've come to appreciate). The right floorboard is bolted on with what appears to be a 6mm allen bolt. There is also a locator pin right of the allen bolt. (The dealer refers to this part as a locator pin...so that is what I'm calling it). Without the pin, the entire control just rotates around the allen bolt, rendering the rear brake useless. Driving home the a couple days ago, the locator pin fell out, and I had no rear brake to use. I have a pin on order, but it won't be here for about a week. Here's the question: This pin just slides in. What's to keep it from just sliding out again??! Yes, I've been wondering for days now, why they didn't just put a second bolt in, instead of some flimsy pin. But, alas, wondering isn't helping my situation. So...please...if anyone can tell me the proper way to install this pin, so that it doesn't come out again, I would truly appreciate it! Thanks much.

Re locating pin. First I would inspect the area where the pin fits and ensure that the other has not in fact broken off. The new pin should tap in to the hole and remain firm. It is a sort of tension pin that fits firmly into the hole. If the hole is worn you may have to re drill the hole round again and either fit a sleeve or use a bigger pin.

Thanks. That is helpful. I stopped by the dealer today. He said once you slide it in, you tap it lightly. Tapping it compresses it a bit and flares it out. So yes, a tension pin it is. The other thing I found is that it is not really supposed to take the weight of the foot peg bracket, the 10M bolt is supposed to do that. Mine is stripped out a bit, so we're ordering a new one. We ought to be able to tighten the new one adequately. Regarding the tension pin, I'll check to see if the old one broke off in there, as you said. When the previous owner replaced the pegs with floorboards, he should have (1) bought a new locator pin (they're only $3) or (2) used a punch to re-flare the pin. If he'd done that, it wouldn't have fallen out. Thanks again.

Pleased you’re sorted. May Pay to slap plenty of thread locker on that bolt hole as the threads may have been compromised.
