Angry First Awww ****

I just recently purchased a 2004 TBA. I also purchased a cover for the bike as I don't have a garage. Now the cover comes with a heat resistant fabric incorporated into it so you can put it on immediately after shutting the bike down. Only one word of advice here for you. Don't put it on backwards as this doesn't put the heat shield in the appropriate places. With that being said I now have a problem and wondered if you have any advice. I have melted plastic on my right header pipe. I have tried the following items to no avail. Gasoline, engine degreaser, plastic scraper, chrome polish. I'm wondering if anyone out there has experienced the same thing and how they overcame it. I have had some success with a wet towel and wiping it off a little at a time while the pipes are still hot after a ride. At this rate it will take me a month. Wondering if there is a quicker solution. I was thinking of Methyl Ethyl Ketone or some sort of acid. Just don't want to jack up the chrome.

I had a similar incident with a shopping bag. I let it cool, then used my fingernail to scrape off as much as possible. Where the material was thicker, I was able to pick an edge and peel small sections off. Then, I used lacquer thinner on a rag, which softens the plastic, and kept it up with my fingernail. You'll have to let any solvent sit on there for a bit. Once all the plastic was gone, I used a chrome cleaner and gave it a good clean, just in case I missed something. It still took a little elbow grease, but there are no lasting marks on the pipes.

Try a hair drier, concentrate on a small spot at a time, as it melts you should be able to pick it off.

Run the bike for a few minutes and when the plastic is all liquid again and just starting to smoke it wipes right off with a couple of paper towels. Just ball up enough paper towels that you don't burn yourself.

Thanks for the info fellas. I tried all the solvents I had and none worked. acetone and non-acetone Nail polish remover, jewelery cleaner, paint stripper, mineral spirits, and muratic acid. What it came down to was very, very gingerly using a small putty knife and lightly scraping until it was all removed and then chrome polish several times. It's not quite where I want it so I'll be doing some 00 steel wool with chrome polish and should take care of it.

Hot pipes an EXTREMELY well ventilated area and Easy-off.
Take care to cover anything on the bike you do not want ruined.
The mist from that stuff will take the paint off anything. Get the pipes hot cover everything else on the bike. Spray easy-off on the area and step away quickly. I almost passed out from doing mine. It works on cold surfaces but with reduced effect.
I had a really nasty spot from the previous owners boot. Took a couple of tries to get it all but it did come off. Works great for cooked on bugs as well.
