Help installing intiminators on America

I managed to lose the instructions that came with my intiminators, but have found most of what I needed here. I removed my left hand fork, removed the internals and gently pumped out the old fork oil. Then with the fork compressed I added 1/2 bottle of the new 5 wt Amsoil, and pumped the forks again and let it settle. I installed the intiminator then added more oil up to 120 mm below the top with the fork compressed. I then added the spring, washer and spacer.

After spending 30 minutes trying to get the cap back on, I removed the spacer, lightly screwed the cap back on, installed the fork on the bike and used the bike to hold everything in place and again tried to install the spacer and put the cap back on. I still can't manage to hold the cap down and get the threads to start.

My question is, was I supposed to shorten the spacer when I added the intiminator, or am I just a wuss? If I'm just not pressing hard enough I'll try again, using more colorful language, but I hate to keep fighting it if I should have shortened the spacer. Or is there a trick that I should know and don't? I've installed Progressive Springs on a Gold Wing and on my Magna with no trouble, but his has got me stumped, so any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Tomorrow I can call Ricor, but naturally they are closed today, so this forum is my only source for information. So, your help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm sure it's the same for any bike, but the instructions I got indicated to shorten the stock spacer by the height of your Intiminator. In my Thruxtons case, .56 inches.

Thanks for the info. That would make all the difference in getting the cap back on. Thanks again.

Use a 22mm socket in your hand to start the cap. This gives you even, steady pressure around the entire cap.

The above, plus rotate the top cap anti-clockwise first until you feel a click. This click signals the start of the thread. Turn clockwise right after that.

+1 on that suggestion! And Baltobonnie's socket suggestion.

if you want to be able to set the sag/preload as before then yes, you did it wrong. On my instructions the recommendation was to shorten the stock spacer by the height of the Intiminator.

edit: there's a bunch of info if you search or just give Ricor a call to confirm.

I'll be calling Ricor as soon as they open today, but yesterday that wasn't an option.
