Sometimes my Speedy doesn't want to go into 1st...

More and more frequently my '09 Speedy won't shift into 1st from neutral, in other words I'll kick the lever down to go into first from neutral but the shift lever/pedal seems stuck. Several times now I have had to grab the clutch with my right hand and reach down and push the shift lever down with my left hand to go into 1st.

This happens usually when I've been out for a few minutes and I'm at a light or whatever and have put the bike into neutral to rest my hands for a minute.

I'm a new owner/rider and I don't want to kick the lever too hard at this point. Does this sound like some sort of adjustment issue to you guys? I had a look at the shift lever linkage and all seems tight.

Thoughts?

Clutch adjustment? Try turning the barrel adjuster out a turn or two and see if it's any better.

I'll have the same problem every great once and a while. If I roll the bike forward and back a bit it'll shift no problem. Happens to me mainly when I'm first starting her up though, which is prolly normal. I came from a honda which is always a pain to get in and out of netural

This has happened on both my bikes... I kick into neutral release the clutch then back on the clutch and kick into first... works for me

Agree. Sometimes mine will stay in second. If I release the clutch to the point where it starts to grab, then back on the clutch, it will drop into first.

I have the same thing. I just slowly let the clutch out till I feel it release then re-engage and continue downshifting. Its usually after I stop at a light in 4 or so and I am stationary

The same for me. I'll usually notice that the neutral light is on, but I seem to be as far down on the shift lever that I can be. So, I let out on the clutch a bit, pull it back in, and then it will shift down to first. Pretty rare occurrence, and always when I am stopped at a light.

Sounds like cable adjustment only
Worth a check

I tried releasing the clutch and pulling it back in, seems to work every time. So simple, why didn't I think of this???

Thanks to all who replied!
