New guy here just picked up a 2003 Speedmaster and had some?
Hi everyone
Well if you told me a year ago my next bike would be a cruser I would be shocked. But I ran across this bike in my town for a great price and very low miles so I bought it and honestly have it for two days now and about 140miles and very happy with it. It handles well stops well and it's not to heavy and does not vibrate much. It's quite.
My bikes in the past
2005 Ducati 749s
2006 Honda CBR 600RR
2000 Ducati 748
1998 Ducati 916 SPS
2003 Buell Blast (got it for the wife for her to train on it)
I have a few ???
I think the bike is running lean and knocking while running. I don't know anything about jetting and the bike is bone stock should I be worried or just ignore it because it pulls smooth. I just filled up with 110oct to see if that will help. Thinking of running a colder copper plugs to see if that helps. I can just keep filling it with 110oct because I have a gas station about 2miles from my house that has it. It's not cheap but not very costly so I could keep doing that if it works.
Tires?? Can I install sport bike type tires? Somthing really sticky any suggestions???
I have already dragged pegs on it VERY NICE!!
I have no gas low light just a petcock about how many miles should I just top off the tank? 120-140 rang I'm thinking?
Thanks
Eric

Welcome!
You might start with some light reading for the jetting questions:
http://www.dinqua.com/Triumph/carbs0.html
It appears in general, these Triumphs run pretty lean when bone stock, hard starting, cold blooded, etc. It takes a little iteration to get it right, but it's worth it.

You might want to consider getting a dyno run. A good dyno operator can give you some great help in determining how your bike is running and what changes to make to get the air fuel mixture right. Usually you can get a dyno run for about $40 -50, which would be money well spent. Otherwise, if you know how to read spark plugs that will also give you a good starting point. And your fuel fill up estimate sounds reasonable. I've gone 150 miles on my America without having to switch to reserve, but others have gone farther, so your 120 -140 sounds reasonable.

I went to my dealer to get a oil change done and talked with the same Tech that does my ducati work and he said the bike is fine. It's back firing because of the EPA system that goes from the head to the air box. He told to to buy this kit from British Customs for 24bucks they had in stock and that will reduce the back fire. So I would have bought it but I was on lunch break and did not have anyware to put the kit and needed to ride back to my office so I need to get the kit this week if I have time. I did get 148mile until the bike shut off and yes 120-135 I think is a good range to stop for fill up. I would hate to be doing 80mph on the highway and the bike shut off. I'm still on the fence for pipes but if I get pipes I will have it dyno tuned and jetted. I like that the bike is quite and does not turn heads. Thank you for replying to my post.
I did have one other slight and I mean slight issue but I think I fixed it. My front forks are squicking so I just cleaned them up with WD40 and they are alot quiter.

Removing the air injection system is a breeze, and while it doesn't add to the performance it does eliminate potential problems. As for pipes, check out the sound of debaffled stock pipes. You can debaffle them yourself, or get a set from Chevy 605 that have already been debaffled. My debaffled pipes give it just enough sound to make it sound like a motorcycle, without being obnoxious. You can also open up the air box and change to a K & N air filter for some additional power. Just spend some time at this forum and you can find many ideas for inexpensive changes to make your bike fit your desires.

I can get the pipes cheap and keep the stock ones if I ever want to sell the bike. I don't want todo the air box just do a K&N drop in and get the bike jetted. I'll be happy with that.

The contents of the kit will fit in your pocket.
