Question clutch plates sticking 02 america

I just had new clutch plates put in my 02 america. The clutch plates seem to be sticking. It drops into 1st with a clunk. Can it be the oil I'm using since the motor and clutch share the same oil? What is the best oil to use for this bike. Any help would be great!

My '02 Bonneville clunks pretty bad going into 1st. I'm not too proud of how it goes into 2nd and 3rd either. Haven't had it but about 4 weeks or so - I may be looking at a new clutch.

Re 02 clutch plates

Thanks Kiwi Tiger and Dan Cibolo for the reply. I was expecting to have such a smooth shift when I got the bike back from the shoip and was about to blow a gasket when I put it into first and it clanked. I'm sure the guy who put the clutch plates in for me didn't use the expensive stuff (mobile 1) so I'll dran it tomarrow and do it right. Thanks again .........

They almost always clunk when you first put them into gear. Mine does the same thing.

Hey Gregger, thanks for the message. I don't know why the darn thing stared the clunking this year, it didn't do it in the past. Thats why I had the new plates put in, but I'll change the oil anyway and live with it. Ride free-live free........Cambo in Iowa

Both of the twins I have, both clunk loudly when the RPM are up - especially under choke with cold oil. They both seem to be quieter with lower RPM and warm. You want to see if it does this warm and with RPM under, say, 900. I would check this before possibly wasting $45 in oil... but if you are convinced they cheeped out on the oil, replace it with good stuff.

Whats up Coldnight, its a rainy night here in cornfield county. Anyway, I've tried this both ways, staritng cold and waiting for the rpms to shallow down and when its hot It actually gets worse . My 72 Bville shifts in hard when cold and great when hot. I'm a rider not a mechanic, I've worked on Harleys for years but when it comes to my Triumphs its like I'm a newborn. I love these bikes but they piss me off. Thanks for the reply....Live free-ride free....

Question Clunk

They all will do that in 1st!. I found (by sugestion)- adjust out, warped disc,? I Break the bond between plates by revving the motor cold - clutch in, & slow down then go into 1st. Makes a big difference! Those buggers stick together O/N & breaking the bond really helps in the AM. If breaking the bond doesnt work- look @ warpage or adjustment? Good luck!!

PS Clutch

Since this all came about so quickly, its remotely possible that something(foreign material got in there & is dragging? Old orig clutch? A plate could have cracked/ splintered or?
Run her hard a while & see if it gets better? If not- you are probably looking @ a clutch? I hope not!! 1 more thing. Old cables can start to stretch. Another place to diagnose. I know my 04 is getting to that point- cable time!! I guess better cable than new clutch??
