New Predators for $180

Well i don't want to mislead, but i have had the insurance settlement come through on my downed Thruxton.
It came to $2000.00 of damage. I am fixing everything back to stock except the mufflers.
The left one got badley scrapped and they want $340 for a single stock one. So i thought the time had come. So i will make up the difference and get some predators. If anyone is interested in a right hand stock muffler for an 07 thruxton give me a shout. I would have preffered paying $525 and not hitting the pavement at 40mph, but every cloud has it's lineing i guess.
All the best John.

Well - I am glad your bike is coming online, but if you are putting preds on (great choice!) why not free up some ponies and throttle response, and remove the airbox while you're at it?

Just a thought! Haven't seen anyone regret it who's done it! I'm in the middle of it myself!

Hi Propforward
Pulling out the air box, doe's it make it a lot louder? Also doe's that mean the side covers come off and you see the pod filters? I have seen that look before, is that what you mean?
Thanks All the best John.

Well, it will make it a bit louder, but frankly your preds will be the bulk of that. It does mean going to pod filters of one tyoe or another, but these can be hid behind the side covers - once complete it is indistinguishable from stock. That's what I'm doing - keeping the stock look.

I haven't finished or road tested mine yet, but I have yet to find a post by someone who is unhappy after removing their airbox.

Just a thought - if you're rebuilding your bike - why not take the opportunity to get a few more ponies?

Each to their own though!

I guess the only thing stopping me is Money. I was thinking the next thing i need is a steering damper. I think the front feels so light as it is. I can do the air box removal later when funds allow. Do i need to rejet again after removing the air box? Or is it ok after the first rejetting with the predators?
Man i can't wait to hear the bike after they are on!
i keep watching you tube videos in the mean time
All the best John

although a steering damper is nice (i have a damper and a fork brace) if yo are going to put on predators you should probably do the bike justice and allow the bike to take advantage of the more free-flowing pipes by pulling out the airbox. the damper can come later.

unless you are hitting the twisties hard (like i was when i lived in colorado and rode the canyons all the time) the damper can wait. i agree you can feel the difference with the damper, but still think if you are doing preds the airbox should be done at the same time. just my 2 cents.

Pulling the airbox makes it a lot louder - for the rider - as there is a lot of sound absorbed in the airbox.

Hi Kiwi
I was wondering about that, because a buddy of mine
has a Toyota truck and he replaced the standard air filter set up with a after market open air filter. The one were there is no air box anymore, just the filter sitting in the open. It gave him more pickup power, but now the truck is quite a bit louder.
Instead of removing the airbox what if i just replaced the standard air filter with one of the KN filters. Will that give me better performance without the noise?
All the best John

If I could have another bike it would be a Thruxton. So congratulations on a fine choice of ride.
I went through the airbox / pipes exercise on my Speedmaster. I was surprised at the noise coming from the pod filters. I think it only made it noisier for the rider.
If I were to do it again I would opt for leaving the airbox and fitting a high flow air filter, and a good set of pipes. Then I would book a session with a Dyno specialist. I did this with my Speedy and we did 5 runs before it was as good as it could be.
At the end of the day its a Thruxton, with that wonderful parallel twin sound made by Triumph. Its never going to do 150 m.p.h. but it will perform well enough if you jet it out correctly after completing your mods.
Just my humble opinion. KT
