I picked up a used 04 Thruxton last week with 700 miles on it.

Inside the fuel filler, the paint is wrinkled up like it had been hit with paint remover, and is coming off. The outside of the tank looks perfect.

I saw a few mentions of paint problems on the bonnie forum. Anyone else have this kind of problem? Is it covered by the Triumph warranty?

Dave

not uncommon, apparently. it happened to mine and i just peeled some away as it flaked up.

the mechanic told me it's not that big of a deal as the thrux has a fuel filter. i thought it didn't???

The only "filter" is a fine screen on the petcock inside the tank. I plan to yank that one & put a decent in-line one on eventually, but there's no rush really. I've got the paint peeling going on too. (I repainted my tank but left the factory paint alone inside the cap) I've pulled the petcock a couple times because I was worrying about it getting clogged, but there's never been the slightest trace of paint particles on it or in the last bit of gas that comes out after I pull the petcock. I'd not worry about it, I think the flakes must disolve once they fall down into the tank.

The Monza-style fuel cap from Bella Corsa is supposed to come with a "special precision aluminum adaptor [that] threads into your tank[']s original bung opening and is locked into place. It has a secondary benefit of protecting your paint and concealing any existing damage. The Monza Cap is threaded onto the adaptor[.]"

I haven't tried it out to see if it actually works, and it's pretty spendy, but it might be worth it if the paint-peeling is really bugging you (or if you just like the Monza style cap).

Had mine replaced under warranty by Triumph. They sent a new tank to the dealer.
