Low Side Accident...

Well... only 250 miles on my new silver thrux, and some dick-weed in an SUV decided to run a yield sign at a rotary and cut right in front of me... I went down low-side on my left. He stopped and then looked at me like "what, did I do something?" Then he was just about to leave as I started yelling his license plate number back at him - and by this point 2 people came over screaming that they were witnesses - and, it just so happens that a cop was a few cars back (but he didn't see it happen). Needless to say... he stuck around.

First and foremost, I'm ok (cop made me go to hospital which was inconvenient... but I got to ride in an ambulance). Right shin is bruised (must have knocked the header or something). But, I'm sure I'll be sore in the morning... nothing I'm not used to.

Miraculously... the thrux is OK!!! Bar end mirror was gouged up, the little peg thing on the bottom of the footrest snapped off, and there is a barely noticable scuff on the muffler - can't see it if you're not looking for it. All I need is a new mirror and she'll be good as new!

When I got up, there was fuel on the ground. Does that happen when a bike goes over? All of the gears work; brakes work; all indicators work; started up with a little hesitation, but maybe that's because all of the fuel was dumped out of the carb?! Anyway, once she ran, it was like nothing ever happened.

Here's my question... is there anything I should do or check after an incident like this to make sure that everything is ok mechanically? Again, on my evaluation, everything was as should be... but I'm not a mechanic.

Also, my rear brake squeaks (did that before accident)... what causes that, and how do I stop it? It's really annoying!

Can't wait to get a new mirror and ride again!!!!

man, i am so sorry to hear about your accident. you handled it better than me. instead of going to the hospital in an ambulance i would have been going to jail in the back of the cop car for pummeling that douche, and he would have been the one in the back of the ambulance!

one good thing i've noticed about these bikes is that they seem to crash pretty well (people i know have wrecked thruxtons while racing and hauling ass and have done minimal damage, compared to my friends ducati monster which she laid over pretty slowly and has dents in the tank from the bars). i lowsided after hitting a patch of gravel several months back and only bent a lever, snapped a shifter, scratched up a bar end mirror and clutch cover scratches (which i filed out, sanded and polished, and now it looks better than new).

one thing you may need to address when a bike goes over is flooding the airbox. this may be the source of your fuel leak (also make sure your fuel line and overflow are still connected to the tank).

when i went down i rode the bike home 20 miles with no prob, but when i came out the next day the bike wouldn't start and there was a puddle of fuel underneath. this was the fuel that had flooded the airbox. to fix this the dealer drained the airbox (i had no idea what it was at the time) and put in a new air filter, problem solved. and even better solution would be to get rid of the airbox completely! i have since, with a few other mods and the bike roars now and pulls like a fiend!

nice to hear you are ok, and that your thrux survived with only minor injuries as well.

Good to hear you are ok. I would tell the insurance company that you would like the dealership to look it over top to bottom and make sure every thing is like new.

dang Crowe, sorry to hear this. You were lucky to have yourself and your bike come through relatively unscathed.
I'm with OKCTriple on having the dealership check out the bike.

Sorry to read about your accident. Frustrating to say the least. I suppose the positive thing is that you will be able to get back on your Thruxton soon and not having to wait ages for a major repair.

Thanks for the support guys.

Took a look this morning - she looked like the day I brought her home (I took the mirrors off last night). And, no fuel on the ground and she fired right up and sounded great.

I was really lucky that myself and the bike walked away relatively unharmed (1 new mirror cost me $39). This was a good lesson... regadless of signs, lights, indicators, speed, etc - you have to assume that you are invisible to people in cars. Period!

Anyone know where I can get an oem footpeg? That little nub is probably no big deal, but I might as well replace it.

Also, my rear brake squeak... any ideas? Someone suggested blowing a little compressed air between the pads and rotor to maybe blow out dust or dirt. Thoughts?

Crowe,
If it's the left footpeg you need, I have it. Yours for the shipping (US).

These dickweeds in SUVs regard STOPSIGNS as advisory.A "Yield" sign means "speed up, you're bigger than everyone else."
yellow light- six more cars.
red light- three more cars.
But don't get me started.
Glad you're OK.

as i digest this experience, my obvious question is what did i do wrong? and what do i need to do differently next time?

obviously, braking hard in a turn will bear the same result, but if you don't have space or time to straighten the bike first, what do you do?

i guess the best approach is to make sure it never gets to that point...
