I'll post pics when I get home from work tonight.
Can't wait to see those pics.

sorry took me so long... a million things going on... here they are:
The GPS looks like it sticks way the heck up away from the bars, but it actually is the perfect height. When I have my tank bag on, the GPS is level with the tank bag and I have great visibility on it...

Okay, this has seriously got my attention. To do away with the analog guages and just use a GPS for everything would be pretty sweet. But what about the odometer?

Guys

I know there is a rule that says " He who dies with the most toys wins" but surely you can find your way with just a street directory or map and using a bit of memory to remember where the heck I am and where I want to go to. Besides you can buy a lot of petrol with $700 to go riding.

A lot of maps have only far away detail of the places I like to ride. The ones that have the Street level detail are so huge, that I'd have to pull over every 10 minutes and refold the map to figure out where I need to go.

While I can't argue that the cost of the GPS is pretty excessive, I can say that you shouldn't knock it until you've tried it. I've been riding back and forth between my house in Herndon, VA, and my friend's place in Winchester, VA for 8 years. I thought I knew every way to go. Within 2 days of having the GPS, I found 5 new routes, all of which had some amazing roads and views.

It isn't so much about knowing where I am and not getting lost, its about being ok with getting lost and knowing that when you switch over to reserve, you don't have to figure out where to find a gas station, it's only three taps away.

You know, I could have bought a lot of gas with the money I've spent buying upgrades, but the upgrades have made the bike what I want it to be and now I want to ride it more than ever. Until I start traveling on my Bonnie, it would be a bit of a waste to have a GPS on it. But, it would be ridiculously cool and trick to have a removable color LCD dash on my bike instead of the analog speedo and tach. I realize theft is an issue, but I could put up with that; just have to remember to remove it.

If I could make a black anodized aluminum bracket to seat the GPS in the place of my guages so that it looked stock and hardwired it into the bike's power so that it came on when I turned the key, that would be so cool! But, no odometer. As long as I use the odometer in the GPS to keep up with my mileage for servicing and oil changes, it wouldn't be an issue.

I'd suggest the new iphone. Full gps that can pipe the audio directions to a bluetooth earbud and you can leave the phone in your jacket pocket and not clutter up your bike or distract you... Plus the new Iphone is cheaper than most gps navs and you'll have the internet in your pocket to look up whatever wherever whenever.

Ello: Is this what you are using? Do you have the iphone wired to the bike? If so, how? Total cost?

Appreciate any feedback.

err, the new iphone with real gps doesn't come out till July 11th http://www.apple.com/iphone/features/maps.html
watch the video.

So the whole headset thing is a theory and something I'll have to look into when it comes out. But would be awesomely conveniant, the iphone will be $199 and any bluetooth headset would connect to it wirelessly.

And could that bluetooth headset hook up to a mp3 player at the same time so you can listen to music AND the gps directions?
