Straight Headers??? Pros and Cons

After viewing You tube and the wife telling me my exhaust has to be louder I saw a video of a guy running just the headers. What are the pros and cons of doing this?

I'm considering the D&D race pipes or removing the baffles from my stock pipes. Any idea on how to do this????

Thanks for all the replys in advance.

By the way 1200 miles on the thrux and it just gets better and better

Randy

Randy, this can be a controversial topic much like oil. Some motorcyclist(read harley guys)believe that noise equates to safety.I have not seen any validated report that indicates that a louder pipe means you can be heard more and thus are safer.
Having sais this, there are validated reports on certian pipes increasing hoursepower. If your wife is looking for performance, there are many, preditor(my choice) TOR, and so. Look right here for suggestions.
The motorcycle industry is under heave fire about noise. We don't need to encourage loud pipes just for the sake of noise. Let's not give the goverment and PACs more reason to pass laws banning performance mods.

pipes

Specialty Spares TT pipes. The set is affordable, comes with new pilot jets. They are nice! I put them on about 2 months ago..my bonnie sounds like a Shelby Cobra rollin down the road. I was looking a the DandD race pipes. Not much clearance under them and I was looking to old school it up anyway. Went Chrome and then Wrapped them with black header wrap to the brackets...totally recommend.

straight stock headers w/ no mufflers sounds like crap. Really raspy. Not nice and deep like the predators or other mufflers.

+1 and wear ear plugs.

Do your neighbors a service though... Idle thru the neighborhood and wait till you get to a busy street to open them up.

There isn't any proof loud pipes make a bike more noticeable but there is plenty of ancillary proof... it is obnoxious enough to hack people off so they are obviously noticeable. I consider loud pipes one more round in my weapon. I wear a yellow jacket and helmet with reflective stickers on front and back, an auxiliary brake light on the back of my helmet (only works with the Thrux though). I left the reflectors on my bike, I have a loud horn and loud pipes and at night i use tire-flys. I'd never go to war with a 1/2 loaded weapon.

EDIT:

TT pipes have a wonderfully wicked howl during straight and level flight at 3500 - 4000 RPM

+1 on the earplugs. i just rode st. louis to memphis on saturday morning and back again on sunday afternoon. my ears are still ringing from 10+ total hours of my predators at 5,000 rpm and 100mph wind. seriously they are still ringing.

Hey randy I have my stock set of pipes and heat wrapped headers that I would give you if you paid for shipping. I cut the pipes in half and drilled four holes thru the last restrictor plate... they sound ****ing KILLER!!! PM me if you are interested

I can tell you from experience that loud pipes are safer.... my D&D full race pipes are so loud no one want to ride next to me and everyone looks in their rear-view when I come up behind them

If its too loud you're too OLD

Elijhathrux,

Thanks for the offer. I'm going to have to regretfully decline for now. I took the mufflers off for a long trip around the block and MAN is it loud. It also seems like I lost some down low power but I may just be imagining things. Needless to say the mufflers are back on and the bike seems like it performs a little better. Am I just imagining things???

And to everyone else thanks for all the replys.

Randy
