I'm 53 carrying to much weight and regularly ride my Thruxton 200+ per day (with stock clip ons) and have never had a problem with my back arms or wrists.
I've had a bad back for over 30 years (that'll teach me for jumping out of perfectly good aircraft)
ride with your legs and gut muscles and you'll not have a problem
i ride with a mate that has a speed triple .we regularly exchange bikes .i prefer my Thruxton on all levels even if the speed triple is technically the better motorcycle .

Could you tell me why you like your Thruxton over the S3?

I have an '04 Thruxton (That I'm keeping) and I'm buying an '08 S3. Different bikes with different missions. I love my Thruxton, And I've done 300+ days on it with the stock clip-ons, I like the riding position.
The S3 is gonna replace a tired Sprint. It'll be my all-weather daily driver & I'll ride it on Sundays when I chase the litre bike boys.
The Thruxton is so cool, and so much fun to ride in it's element. Commuting to work is not it's element, and while I do pretty good keeping up with the litre bikes on it, I work way harder than they do.
If the Thrux is what you want, go for it, but they should knock off at least 500.00 for that one... and I don't recall a "Special" edition, so I'd check into that real carefully. They may be blowin smoke up your behind!

I'm thinking about going the other way. Wanna trade?
I have the stock clip ons. I do 250+ miles at least every sunday. I try to get out on Friday as well. If anything they could be an inch lower, a little wider, with a little more downward sweep.

in a nut shell ...'cos it suits me in what i want /need out of a motorcycle.
i feel good on my Thruxton.when i'm on a speed triple i push harder than i should .I'm more relaxed on the Thruxton i enjoy each and every ride.
sorry can't be more specific it's more about feel than technical detail

Yea, I will second (third, etc) the stupid behavior inducing capabilities of the S3. I owned a 98 from new that was silly fast for street riding, then upgraded to an 04...after a while you have little comprehension of the speeds you are regularly doing.
Till the law reminds you.
I got nabbed doing 135 in a 55. Long story short, my clean record, the particular conditions, and my adult behavior (after being stopped) had me off with a warning. I should have been jailed and lost my license for at least a year.
I traded the bike in that day for a Thruxton and have never been happier. I can easily do a couple hundred miles with the stock set up, and have done 500+ with a riser bar kit / better saddle.
Oddly enough, when I had the riser bar kit on the ergonomics felt very much like my 04 S3. I was using the British Customs top yoke kit. I have since gone back to the stock clip ons.
Good luck...they are both fantastic bikes.

Entertaining the thought of an upright position on my Thruxy. That yoke conversion set for sale or are you switching back and forth?

Thanks for sharing that with me. You just summed up what I'm looking for in a bike.
Being a hooligan is very overrated.

Nah, I ended up giving it to my step-dad for his Thruxton. I told him he should have gotten the Bonnie!

i find myself going too fast all the time on my thrux, i can't even fathom what kind of trouble i would be in with the speed triple!!
i've done 500 miles in a day with the stock bars and saddle with 15 lbs. of backpack on and came through it exhausted but in one piece. that being said i won't be doing it again.
"special edition" sounds like some b.s. to me. if anything it has some dealer added extras (exhaust, mirrors, flyscreen etc.). i have not heard of a factory special edition thrux but they all end up being "personal editions".
