Question YSS Shocks question(s)

1) I just put YSS shocks on the back of the Thruxton... my question is: the bushings seem to be a bit wider than OEM, and they "hang over" (are wider) then the posts they go onto (the posts welded onto the Thruxton's frame). There is about a quarter inch of hangover, probably less once the bolt is tightened down.

Should I be worried about this?

2) I also noticed the inner bushing piece was steel on the OEM shocks, but aluminum on the YSS... no biggie - unless they are carrying more weight due to the question posted above....

Did anyone else with YSS shocks notice this?

3) on a related note, the YSS shocks I ended up with are about an inch or inch and a half lower than the OEM shocks. Unless told otherwise - I plan to lower the front forks by the same amount (raise them up through the triple tree by same distance). Is there ANYTHING else I should do for this - i.e. will it screw up my rake/trail handling etc.

Thanks,
Carlos

Carlos,

May I ask why you bought shocks 1" lower than stock? Are you not worried about the reduced ground clearance when leaned over?

At any rate, yes you can lower the front...to be honest, I would hate to loose any more clearance as some guys report dragging pegs etc..

Unhappy My own dang fault!

Argh! It's killing me. I found a pair of YSS 302-TRLs on eBay (you see where this is going...)

They were on a Ducati Super Sport 1000 which is shorter, 340mm (although the actual serial number on the shocks say they are 370mm... they aren't).

The description says they have the height adjustment, +10mm.... so I was hoping to be at 350mm, not so far off from the Thruxton's 360mm.

Yeah - I know - I should have waited for the perfect fit. I figured: 1/2 inch isn't THAT much...

I didn't even think about the reduced lean angle though.

The lower rear end will make steering much slower and with the shorter shocks it puts the swingarm at a differnt position which may cause more "squat" under power. With lowering the fork tubes in the trees you will shorten the wheel base and with the new swingarm position it may make the bike unstable. Plus with your weight and if you corner with any aggresion you will touch down parts much quicker. I have nothing to back any of this up and I'm sure somebody will point this out to me

Arrow Update.

The one thing I DON'T WANT from my suspension is non-confidence!!!!

So:

Update - I'm returning the YSS Z302TRL shocks because they were not actually the TRLs shown on the eBay (fleaBay!) listing, they were just TR sans L - which means no length adjustments possible. Even with full refund I'll lose about $70 on all the shipping and the new set of bushings & inserts to fit the Thrux, but lesson learned!!!!

Now I'm looking at either:

1) YSS Z302TRL
2) YSS G302TRCL (piggyback)
3) Used KYB Shocks (piggyback) but I think I'll steer clear of used shocks from now on ;-)

So no track date for me this weekend. May barely just make next weekend if I can get them in on time....

Thanks for all the feedback.

- Carl
