LED Blinkers

Question.
I wired in new LED fron blinkers and everything was OK. They Blinked fast but I new they would until I put in a new relay.
Wired up the Tail light and no problems.
Wired up the rear blinkers and ALL 4 blinkers flash no matter which directional is on.

Is it still a resistance issue that will be fixed with the new relay??

Not only do you have to change the relay, but you also need to either pull the indicator (idiot light) bulb or swap it out with an LED bulb.

Are your LEDs polarized?

Everthing is wired correctly. It is simply an electrcal resistance issue. I am no electronic wizard by any means but I found this though..

I'm not convinced that the relay and changing the indicator bulb to an LED is all that I need but I will start there.

I ordered some LED warning lights anyways just so I could see them during the daytime, but I won't get them until next week. I am just going to pull the warning light bulb for now (assuming I can figure out how to get to it) and see if that works. I found a relay at my local auto store made for LED's and it does slow them down. I think it's just the cross wiring to the little dash bulb (and the low resistance from the LED siglans) that makes them all flash.

Well that was easy enough. I pulled the dash blinker warning light and everything works as it should. Hopefully the LED warning light will work in it next week.

Wanna Buy Some LEDs?

I just bought (4) LED 1156 replacement bulbs and a LED flasher. Then I realized that my aftermarket blinkers use a mini bulb, so the LEDs I bought won't fit. I really like my small blinkers, so I've decided not to use the LED bulbs and flasher. They’re 360 degree bulbs and will fit blinkers that use a full size 1156 bulb. If anyone in the continental US wants ‘em, I'll sell the bulbs and flasher for $100 shipped. Including shipping and handling, I paid a total of $124. They’re unopened and I’ll give you links to details if you PM me.

The LED idiot light might not work correctly with LED turn signals.

As I understand it, current flows through the idiot light in both directions, depending on which side is blinking; the other side serves as a ground path for the idiot light, with the current apparently being low enough to not illuminate the lights. This bi-directional polarity is why a polarized LED does not work properly in this particular idiot light.

If you have LEDs in the lights and the idiot light current is the same polarity as the lighting circuit on the non-flashing side (which it seems to be from the "stock" diagram below), the idiot light should work but the LED lights on the "off" side might blink too. This is what happened when you had the regular light bulb in the idiot light.

The solution would be to rewire the idiot light with two diodes and its own ground path, so that it is unaffected by, and will not affect the "off" side of the turn signals. The other advantage of doing it this way is that you can use a polarized LED, which is what all of the smaller ones that fit the socket are.

Here is a diagram of the stock turn signal circuit:

Here is a diagram of the circuit rewired with the diodes:

Disclaimer: I have not done this, but I have researched it and have some basic electrical knowledge. I'm not claiming that this is how it will work, this is what I think will happen.

You need a non-polarized LED bulb for the idiot light. I'm using LED turn signals, LED idiot lights (non-polarized turn signal indicator and polarized neutral and oil indicators) with an LED flasher. That's all I needed and everything works fine.
