paint stripper

can anyone suggest a good lacquer stripper for the engine covers?

I have used Jasco. Most hardware stores carry it. Apply it with a brush. Wait a couple of minutes, clean off with steel wool. Repeat as needed.
Cases are now ready for polishing.

I thought Red Devil lye was good for this also. Don't use oven cleaner...

If you opt for the Jasco, be sure to wear some heavy duty rubber gloves and goggles.

make sure they're heavy duty. The cheap latex gloves i used actually seemed to be worse than using it bare handed

I would strongly suggest getting the aircraft stripper as mentioned before, something that you can paint on. Sprays tend to go all over the place. A nice set of thick chemical resistant gloves is nice too. Let the stripper do the work, leave it on as long as you can. The clear coat will bubble right off.
