Looking at the rear

I love my bike from just about any view but when I walk up to it from behind... the angle of the clip-ons, that big fat cowl, the shape of the tank and those gorgeous clocks fill me with pride and anticipation.

Haven't yet found the FEK that appeals to my eyes AND my wallet - sure, there's some beauties out there, but I'm saving for the '18 IOMTT...

Anywhoo. Can't help but notice the curve of the rear light looks like it would tuck under the cowl real nice. Just thinkin' but hm... The parts fiche has the rear fender/ECU tray for about $180 - less than what most are asking for a stamped sheet metal replacement - maybe I'll just cut it to suit what I want to leave, fashion a bit of sheet aluminum to hold the light/plate (as I've done in the past...) and be done. It's going to stop raining here soon, I just know it!

I could trace the pan template I made easily enough. It's a rough in from there but worked well for mine.let me know if you want it and I'll trace and upload. View attachment 466458 View attachment 466466

Yes. I'd like that. Did you make a recess for the ECU, or will it just lay flat on top of your panel without trouble?

I was waiting for Werkes to come take my bike and fit their cans on it and do a FEK, but it's been postponed, so I'm kinda itching to get to work myself. Did you read Ryan Sterling's post on his similar FEK? It was almost a year ago...

The ECU is just strip tied to the pan. There is a foam pad on the bottom to soften hard hits.

Haven't seen Sterling post. Link?

I have my original cardboard template with me. It's just too big for an A4, so I'll trace on an 11 x 14 at work and then scan.

Thanks a lot. The Ryan Sterling guy seems to have moved on last July? and his pictures and templates are now just place-holders. This is why I've started adding triumphrat hosted thumbnails to my pics, because my hobby-server (serveronthewall) could disappear anytime and my pics would not longer be available on my posts... Anyhow, here's the link to his thread - http://www.triumphrat.net/club-cafe/708090-diy-1200r-fek.html

Oh sure, now that I've cut up my wiring to fit my new lights, I get a link to the proper plug! lol. I may just order one anyway.

Here is a PDF of my template. It is on 8.5 x 14 paper, so the edges are right at the edge of the image. Dimensions are called out in the tracing. It is over sized a bit on width and taper, so you'll have some wiggle room to do a precise (custom) fit. I found that I had to shave a bit where the sides are to clear the welds on the subframe that hold the muffler brackets. The notch on the left is for the wiring harness that goes through that area. Take care when mounting the plate as you can accidentally flip the seat release catch to a down position, making it not fit flush with the frame.

There are no markings for drilling fasteners. Once the final size and position is set, use clamps to hold it to the frame and then mark your holes as appropriate. I used the original mounting screws that screw in from the bottom in the forward area. For the rear, I just re-used two of the bushings and long stainless bolts with nylox nuts. You'll need to cut some manner of access hole in the bottom if you are running any wires from under the frame.

My plate holder/light holder is 1/8 x 1/5 aluminum, bent to shape. I'd reccommend using Al over sheet metal for your license holder. Easy to work with and doesn't require finishing to match the bike.

Let me know if you have any questions.

I bought the Triumph FEK and used only the basic pan for my bike. I then built a bracket for the strip light and another for the number plate. I started with a tucked number plate and then made a second bracket for a standard more legal looking plate. I wanted the Triumph pan because I have an alarm which sits on top of the ECU and thought that it should be mounted as designed by Triumph. Now I think I should have made the lot. Lost my nerve for some reason.

Would recommend the lights, they look very nice on the bike. (lights came from eBay in China)

I'm curious to see that tail light next to the stock one. And wonder if you could change them out...
I've used that Lucas 'type' tail light on a few classic builds - I think it was ubiquitous on British bikes in the 50s-60s - They're all over ebay for ~$12 - It's quite similar in shape, but smaller than what comes on our Thruxtons, maybe half the size? That FEK looks to have room under the light to fit something as large as our stock light. That listing has ended but in the 'seller's other items' there's more of them available - Price looks reasonable to me, and the cast item looks quite sturdy. Pondering ensues.

<Edit> Anybody else concerned that having only the top of the license plate supported could lead to having the plate vibrate developing splits/cracks?
