DIY metal spray painting question.

I'm getting my FEK (from new bonneville) tomorrow in the mail, and i had an idea to paint the "Shaped ABS protective plate" to match my bike. Its not entirely visible, but would make a cool little accent. problem is i don't feel the need to pay extra cash and run to a paint shop for something so small, and seemingly simple. My question is, how can i go about this in the most "professional" way possible with some good ol'rusto?

in my head i see it as
-spray on some primer
-sand
-spray on a couple layers of color
-finish with a spray of some clear coat

sound about right? has anyone done this, so i can see the results?

You will not be able to see the plate unless you stick your head in the wheel well. Since it's black, it will match your frame. If you must paint it, get some of that paint that's made for painting plastic. Sand lightly, clean with some rubbing alcohol, and spray away. You shouldn't need a primer unless the can says to use one.

I used the Krylon black plastic paint on the gauges of an old Honda. The 30yr old plastic was getting chalky looking. It came out looking better than new.

I don't know how well it would hold up in a wheel well. Especially since rattle can paint tends to be soft.

Being in the wheel well - try painting with black undercoat or truck bedliner in the rattlecan. Or paint black and then coat with the clear rock chip protectant that auto stores sell. This should hold up pretty good.
