Thruxton Newbie from NYC

Just put a deposit on a silver 2008 Thruxton at the shop down the street in Soho. They sell Ducati's, Aprilia's and KTM but I had to have this one. This will be my first twin and non-rice burner crotch rocket after 20 years of riding sportbikes. Previous bike - FZR 1000 street fighter stage III tune w/145 rwhp (all plastic removed, flat black tank, moto-x headlight, fox racing shox, etc.).

I would like to get thoughts on mods to be made by the dealer before I pick it up. The rear fender clearly has to go and I plan on getting the fender eliminator kit from newthruxton.com with small billet clear turn signals. The mirrors are so ugly the shop won't show the bike with them and I don't plan on using any mirrors (I turn my head) so I'll skip the bar ends.

With respect to performance, I like the look of D&D shorty underbike twin pipes (street with aluminum caps) and the newthruxton.com airbox removal kit and ai removal seem like standard practice for these bikes. Any thoughts on these performance mods? I don't feel the need to go crazy with new cams and carbs right away but I am open to the concept. Are the D&D's insanely loud? I am coming from a D&D on the FZR 1000 with an open baffle for a frame of reference - it was loud but inline fours have a different sound than twins).

I am 5'9'' 135lbs so I am not overly concerned that the shocks/forks are underdamped (I will replace the rear shocks with Ohlins when they wear out and then upgrade the front springs).

Thanks in advance for your help.

please... I'm very curious to see what the Silver & Red looks like. Photos on the Triumph sight are brutal.

Silver Thruxton

The pictures on the Triumph site are terrible and don't do the bike justice. I will post a couple of pics next week.

Congrats. Welcome aboard.
My older brother had a 89 FZR 1000 back in the day. Beautiful bike.
As far as the dealer doing any mods, save your money and do them yourself. All the mods you are talking about are not that hard to do. Plus it's some what gratifying doing all the work yourself.

Welcome! I got my '07 Thruxton from the same guys. Although (to be expected) you'll pay a little more given that you're buying in NYC, it's good to have the guys there and close to offer support as needed going forward.

I gotta say I love my Staintunes. They have a nice throaty growl and not abnoxiously loud (not suggesting the others are). They are $$, but I found are worth it.

Looking forward to those picts! Congrats on the new addition.

Thanks for the welcome. So are you a fan of the service at the Soho Triumph shop? Although I am reasonably handy with tools, doing anything other than the most basic maintenance is tough because I don't have a garage.

The other big new bike shop in NYC (only japanese bikes) in midtown has horrific service. I would definitely have been able to cut a better deal on the Thruxton if I bought the bike a few months ago but it is what it is here in NYC since everyone wants to buy when the weather warms up.

FYI, there is a shop out in Greenpoint (Brooklyn) called Works Engineering (www.worksengineering.com) run by a guy named Eric and all they do is work on classic twins, mostly euro's like Triumphs, Ducati's and BMW's. Cool bunch of guys if you haven't met them. I happened upon it by chance when I needed some new tires installed on the FZR in a hurry last year.

That's great to know! Thanks. I've been fortunate and beyond the basic required 'check-ups' - I haven't needed any service. They are incredibly busy (which is expected given they're in the city), so to the extent you want discretionary stuff done, get on the calender NOW! (seriously)

For example if you want to do the AI elimination and get new pipes on, get in the calender now. In fact, given that you have the leverage now (that you just put the deposit down), just have them do it when it comes in...they'll be more inclined to cut you a better deal.

Service is expensive there - I won't sugar coat it. They do good work though.

Congrats on the bike again. There aren't many Thruxtons in the city - prepare to get a TON of comments.

-Brad
