Angry Oil Filter Wrench (help...)

Hey guys,

So after fighting a losing battle trying to wrestle off my oil filter (this is my 1st oil change since buying the bike), with an "adjustable/one size fits all" wrench, I sought the actual wrench to get the job done. (The thing is well frozen on there) ... I got a "67mm/65mm" wrench, which fit the replacement Triumph filter (which I had onhand), however it slipped and was a might too big for the stock oil filter.

I'm not sure if the edges have been rounded off, or if it's not the right size.

Anyone have a similar problem? I found a "65mm" one online (not a "65/67") - but not sure if it's any different.

I'm this [ ] close to driving a screwdriver threw it and torque'ing it off that way.

Really frustrating day...why is it the simple thing that are always the biggest PAIN IN THE (*@#^&!!?!??!

Thanks for any help

(Also I dripped some old oil on the new Suede seat... ... nice, way to go)

check to make sure the adapter bottoms out before putting the ratchet / extension on.... I have had those "multi size" adapters not bottom out all the way with the ratchet fully seated.... just enough to keep the oil filter from engaging on the flutes...

partially because some of those adapters are thinner where the ratchet fits in, and some filters have more of a concave surface and/or more rounded edges.

I ended up getting a KD tools 3253 and use purolator one filters.... the flutes are very well stamped out, and the tool is nice and heavy. The generic ones from autozone, etc - I always have problems with (although they used to sell a plastic variant that was GREAT).

do you have some of those thin plastic grocery bags lying around? maybe double foliding one of those over and sandwiching between the adapter and the filter would provide enough filler for the gap so that it would work? (if that makes any sense).

To get the old one off - a large pair of channel locks might work. Cleaning the old filter off with windex and drying it off might give a little more grip (to do it by hand).

Red face

Thanks for the help - I'll try the bag trick. The thing is LOCKED on there. I'm not sure who screwed this one on at the factory -- maybe he had a fight with his girlfriend or something, it's LOCKED on there. I ordered your suggested part. The one I have is shallow and kind of cheap...hopefully that'll work. If not, I'll bring it to the dealer and make em pry it off.

Thanks for taking the time

yeah - I noticed the same thing with mine. They probably put it on there dry, with some kind of machine that over tightens it. I used a set of channel lock pliers - very large ones, and basically crushed the filter a bit so the pliers would catch.... that's what it took to get it loose.

That adapter is great - but it is a tight fit - I have one filter that was dented just a tiny tiny amount at the bottom - the filter wrench really did not want to come off of that filter.

Others might have some tricks to remove the filter. Maybe hot versus cold might make a difference with that gasket? IF you tried removing it when it was cold, try it when it's warm - or the reverse. Not sure if it will make a bit of difference anyway....

Thats the only way mine would come off as well.

Got mine off by belting a big screwdriver right through it with a couple of judicious taps with a hammer and then using the screwdriver as a lever - works fine - you only need to get it to turn a few degrees and then it becomes loose and dead easy to unwind by hand. It being thrown away so why be precious about using an expensive tool when this works well and costs nothing

Just remember to keep the oil tray under the engine as you will have some oil leak out of the filter when you puncture it.

Tightened the new one up using a rubber glove to get decent grip and have had no probs since.

I've also had to use the screwdriver meathod before. That's why I prefer k&n filters for their ease in removal.

I always put mine on by hand. After I ride it, I check that it is snug. I have never had a problem on my car, boat or bike.

I have a couple of adjustable oil filter wrenchs that tighten their grip as you turn. They are not the strap style but are closer to the cup style. You turn them with a 3/8 ratchet , they work great.
