Thruxton Trunk Mod....

Since a lot of you asked me for the trunk mod... here are some pics.
This mod is one of my favour, there is a lot of space under the cowl in which will fit a jacket ore other stuff.
But there is a sacrifice... sadly my wife can't come with me when I am on the Road with my friends...

I just removed the rear part of the foam with a sharp knife and kept the part. Maybe I will glue the foam back together sometimes.

I reshaped the seat a little. You can use the original imitation leather ore take the seat to someone who puts real leather on it (like I've done)

that looks great! I really like the leather seat.

Maybe you could get the pad covered with leather, stick some heavy duty velcro on the bottom of it and also on the pan, and stick it back on for 2 up riding?

that, or pickup a stock bonnie seat cheap on ebay.

thanks sweatmachine.

In the matter of fact the original thruxton seat/cowl is realy not a bad looking one...
there is just a little cheap reshaping needed and the look of the bike is realy different...

That looks like it will be really useful. Nice work! I am planning on doing something very similar with my seat, but instead of straps, I was going to install one of those nylon enduro motorcycle fender tool bags under the cowl so that I can hold small items. I have couple questions:

Was the foam glued to the seat pan at all in the area you cut off, and was it difficult to separate from the pan?

Do you find that the rear lip of the seat foam compresses more easily when you are sitting way back in the seat, now that all the foam behind it has been removed?

Thanks!

Yes, the foam was glued on the pan, but they did not used a strong glue, so you can remove the foam very easily without any tools or foam sticking back on the pan.

Usually I am sitting close to the tank and not often close to the rear end leaning to the lip. But since the leather is thicker and tighter covered to the pan (as the imitation leather) the remaining lip is realy stable.

On the third and fourth picture you can see on the top of the seat a mark from the cowl (which fits tight). This gives an additional stability to the lip.

If you planing to cary a jacket, I can recommend the straps, because you can tie the jacket before you mount the cowl.

Pepe,
That is an excellent idea! Well done. I "bookmarked" it for future reference.
I'd suspect that the whole project will cost less than a Corbin Smuggler
and may actually provide more space. Thanks, again.

Thanks for the info Pepe. That was the only thing I had been worrying about - glad to see it is not an issue!

The Front Fender is not a big deal, this is the original Thruxton Fender with the brackets from the Bonneville screwed on.
You have to bend the bracket a little in the desired shape...
which work very easy since the material is not very thick.
After that, I welded the front and the rear Bracket in the middle together (behind the fork leg). Ready...
As I wrote, the bracket is realy thin and lightweight, and there is no need to mount the bracket to the Fork
(like it is on the Bonnies) is enough to screw it to the fender.

There's a lot of modified Bonnies around and I am pretty shure, you can get
a cheap used set of the brackets (like I've done).
