Rotten TORS

I took my 05 Thruxton out yesterday, first time this year and noticed the chrome on the left side TORS muffler has surface rust. Well its not surface rust, the chrome is bubbled and the muffler is rotting out with only 4000 miles on it
only the left side is affected. the rot is forming near the mounting bracket and is 3 inches in diameter
bike is stored in a heated garage
has anyone else experienced this? (not you, the muffler)

Rot?

I have the same year bike, bought new in November of 05, had TOR's installed 2 months later in January of 06. I have 7800 miles. Just went to check.....not a spot of rot, rust, or anything.

Could it be some road salt that got on your pipes and didn't get washed / rinsed off in time?

That's why I like Stainless mufflers like the Predators (soon for sale) and the customs pipes I have on the way!

I have 6k on mine and riding in all weather ( even in winter ) and have had leather bags rub on mine for 1k miles . To me that chrome's bulletproof . Might want to call Triumph on them . You never know . They might hook you up.

I'm baffled (pun intended)
the rust is under the chrome
the bike has never seen salt, never put away wet
the right pipe is fine?????
the warrantee was up in Oct 07 but I'm going to talk to my dealer
I had this happen to two sets of BUB pipes on an older BMW, maybe its something in my garage I always suspected the cats were peeing on the pipes buy the cats have been gone for two years

no rust on my 79 T140

Get yourself some preds or something similar, better sound, better quality and better everything. None of my mods have ever included OEM parts, waste of money when there are much better quality products out there for your money.

I had TORs until last Autumn. 4 years use, rain, shine, salt etc. No problems.

Do you do a lot of short rides? That would be my guess, that you don't burn off the condensation between your rides.
Nor sure Triumph would warrantee the rust for the above reason. My suggestion is to get the Arrow low mounted exhaust or equivalant. One muffler would tend to burn off better.

thanks for all your advice and opinions but what I was really looking for was someone to offer me a replacement left muffler cheap, maybe from a bike that fellover in the parking lot onto its right side
I'll take one from a crashed bike but hate to "wish" that on anyone
I am seriously conisdering the EPCO mufflers
there is a set of D&D in the classifieds but I have heard that they are very loud

I wonder if Triumph would consider the muffler as part of the emmisions sytem?
I'll have to review the emmsions warranty
