I have a few questions for you:

1) How many turns on the emulator screws did you use for preload? I used 2.5... The Traxxion Dynamics papers say "2 full turns for street, 3 for race, for track use or more low speed compression damping use alternate emulator hat supplied with emulators" (I did not receive any "alternate emulator hat", unless it's made of clear crystal and I can't see it)

2) Did you reuse all your bushings & seals? The haynes manual goes on about replacing half of them, but they look ok to me (and I don't have replacements) so I just reused the old ones. Is this ok???

3) I assume when you drop the emulators back into the forks, you drop them in with the long part of the screw/preload spring sticking UP. Please confirm - the directions do not say!

4) Traxxion sent me 1 liter of fork oil. I'm halfway done (one fork only) and to me it looks like there won't be enough oil to finish the other fork. Do you happen to remember if you used more than one liter? (assuming you filled to 110mm before springs inserted)

Thanks for the info. I finally had to carve up wooden broom handle and hold the other end of it in a vise... but I got it! W00t! Before midnight too ;-) ... at least the first side...

Carlos,
Not sure who you directed this to, but here's my $.02 worth:

1) I followed the 2 turns since all of my riding is on the street.

2) I replaced the fork seals and the copper washer under the damper rod bolt.

3) That's what I did. They should nestle into the damper rod that way.

4) I needed more than 1 liter. But then I screwed up my measurement and put too much in the first fork and had to pull the leg back out and dump some out and re-measure. If I hadn't screwed up, I still think it needs a bit more than 1 liter.

I used 10wt fork oil. I also did the ZRX rear shock swap ($140 on ebay!). Now that I've got some miles on it, I'm really happy with how it turned out. Its amazing how much more planted the bike feels. Hope yours goes as well.

Rob

CArlos,

Heres my experience:

1. 3 turns, and the "hat" is something that doesn't apply to us.

2. Reused the seals, but replaced the copper washer.

3. Spring to the top on the emulator.

4. I used more than a quart, not much more, but more. Used 15 wt.

You are going to be amazed at the improvement.

Andy

I actually had it at three turns, but went to four (racetech says 4 for racing, not sure why that's different than the kit you bought)

Yes, spring upwards

used just at 1 quart of 15 w (called Racetech to get their recommendation on oil level)

lastly, no one is mentioning the required PVC spacers between the emulators and our damping rods..I too was unsure about this but racetech told me with the type of damping rods we have, they were required...anyone think otherwise?

see this for some good pics and instructions:

I used the Traxxion kit that includes the modified damper rods. Their instructions had no mention of a spacer between the rod and the emulator.

Mixing Fork Oil brands - how bad?
OK, so I won't have enough Maxima 20 wt fork oil to finish my other fork.

I'm sure I'm over analyzing this, but it bugs me that different brands have different viscosity and I really want to do this right, you know? I want any mistakes on the track to be MY farkups, not the bikes!

Here's the options I can think of:

1) Wait a week till traxxon mails me another liter (no local dealers have it - I called about 20 in the last 2 days)

2) Do what traxxon support suggested: just use all you can, and top off with any other brand 20 wt fork oil.

3) Do second fork with only Maxima fork oil, then level the two fork oil levels by removing some oil from the fork already completed and adding it to the other; dropping the level to, say 130mm (instead of spec'd 110mm)

4) Do number 3, but then top off both forks with brand B fork oil to 110mm (so they both have the same matching viscosity from the mixed fork oils)

5) Drain the fork already done, and do both forks with brand B fork oil

What say ye, court of wise old bike people???

Thanks for any advice...

Signed,
Malcontented in Maryland

Bummer.

I'd probably do #2, since the amount is small and even if the "other" brand's 20wt is closer to Maxima's 15wt, the dilution should be minimal. But then I might have little voices telling me to do it right and get exactly the same viscosity in both forks - either replacing what you did, or waiting for the other bottle of oil to show up. Good luck!

Rob

110 mm from the top using 20 wt is far too much IMHO anyway

Racetech, the makers of the cartridges Traxxion sold you, call for 130 mm anyway, using 15w
