Mike here. Answer: No.

I currently use a cone oval copy of a K&N. They are IMPO exactly the same as K&N, only without the embossed letting on the chrome covers. They come preoiled with a clear oil, but can be washed and reoiled with K&N oil when/if needed. The $$$ I save by not using K&N allows me to add all the other upgraded parts/hardware.
