starter issues

Got on my thruxton this morning and when i turned the key to 'on' the starter motor started turning over without having hit the starter toggle switch. So i turned the key back tried it again and same problem . Note that the starter motor turns over with only the key turned to 'on', engine kill swith off an not having hit the starter toggle. So i got the bike started but could still hear the starter wurring away so shut the bike off. I am realy quite stumped where to even begin with troubleshooting this one. Anyone have any thougths? Greatly apprecieated. - thanks

I'm guessing here, 3 possibles:

-starter solenoid
-starter relay (cheap, replacement available at any auto parts store, same as a Ford Ranger but bring yours to compare)
-starter button in control

First thing to do, check the starter circuit wiring for damage (worn insulation, broken connectors/switches).

I don't have a wiring diagram handy, but there should be a connector for the starter switch circuit, disconnect it, then turn the ignition on.

If the starter runs with the starter switch disconnected, your problem is more than likely with the starter relay (if a motorcycle starter is anything like a car's, the solenoid is part of the starter).
If, on the other hand, the starter doesn't run, your problem is with the starter switch.

It is the starter solenoid no doubt, somebody else had that problem few years ago to the extent that the bike was in gear, moved forward, collided against my bike with me on the saddle.
The results of the collision is for another thread.

I had the exact same thing happen. It's the starter relay.
My dealer had to order one, which was a two-week wait.
A relay from a Ford Ranger is a less expensive replacement, and should be on the shelf at most auto parts stores:
GP Sorensen, part number MR78 (or so it says on the box).
