Easy to say that... but it's February and 60 degrees here. There hasn't been a week all year that I haven't been able to ride and be warm and dry.

California is a mixed blessing. All the best environment and roads and all the worst people and rules.

Funny when people comment on the worst people when almost all the people are transplants form everywhere else in the country.
I find that many people from else where do not consider California their home, so they treat California such as a temporary place, sort of like many treat a hotel room - they dont pick up and they dont take the time to get to know the people.
The rules I do not like either, but with many of the kinds of people here, mostly transplants that take advantage of our state I would imagine California being a pretty crappy place if most of those rules were not in place. It ruins it for the Californians but the best way to fix it is just stop moving here and taking up our beautiful open space that we once had.

If you are being transferred, there should not be a problem.

I was transferred there myself. They just do not want people going out of state and buying a non california vehicle, that does not have the california smog items on there. Moving in is a different situation. they used to charge $300 per vehicle to do this, but they had to refund the money. If you are being transferred and already owned your car and bike, they make arrangements for you. You have to take your bike to the DMV and they have to check the serial numbers on the frame and the motor.

You are lucky. I moved from california to arizona. California, you do not have to smog bikes, only cars. Arizona you have to smog both. none of my california motorcycles would pass smog tests in arizona. I have to redo the settings everytime I go to smog the vehicle in arizona. they pop, idle high, and barely run, and I have to take out the insides of the mufflers to get them to pass, believe it or not. You are lucky you are moving to california and not arizona.

Amen Whitehurst. We do have a lot of out-of-towners moving in and effing things up, but that's what happens when there are good jobs to be had and wonderful weather to go with it. It's no wonder 3 of the nation's Top 10 most populated cities are in California.
To be honest, the only thing I hate about this state is/are the Smog law/s, but I hate it with the fury of 1,000,000 suns, I've considered moving out of state off and on because of it. But Californians aren't wanted anywhere else, but that's another hijack for another thread. (Sorry!)

Sroberts, when was 60 degrees considered too cold to ride? That's beach weather.

BamaT100.. talked to a buddy of mine from Buena Park...I had to call him to see if this was a joke or not,he informed me it wasn't. Don't waste your time with the DMV...! There are ways around it (exeptions to the rules.)

1) If you obtained it as part of a divorce or inheritance settlement.

2) Purchased it to replace a vehicle which was destroyed or made inoperative beyond
reasonable repair while you were using it out of state.

3) Purchased it to replace a vehicle stolen while you were using it out of state.

4) Were on active duty outside of California, and you registered the vehicle in the state
of your last military service...Hope this helps... US1 was one of the best rides i ever did back in 72..I'm living here on the East Coast Cape Cod it's 28* as I speak.....!

If you are moving to California and purchased the bike while you were living somewhere else, it won't be a problem. My Kawasaki had 3,000 miles on it when I moved to California, but it was purchased when I lived in North Carolina. I had no problem registering it once I explained the situation at the DMV. I won't, however, able to transfer the title to California until it has 7,500 miles. I don't care as long as it is registered.

I see a lot of people complaining about the smog laws here. ***? I guess you guys think it's worth ruining everybody else's air so that you can get a few more horsepower out of your motors? I don't. The smog laws are just fine with me.

I really think people are just jealous of Californians. We have the best weather, the highest incomes and some of the best roads (that we can ride the whole year round.) Sure there's a lot of traffic, but you learn to deal with and avoid it. There's no other place in the world where I would want to live.

Dremel Tool

I once heard of someone who used a Dremel tool with a rubber tip to spin their speedo up to the "correct" mileage.

These things spin at 15000 rpm...a lot faster than a drill. Should only take a couple of hours. Just sit back with a 6-pack, your IPOD, and ENJOY!!! (Hope your speedo doesn't blow with redline rpms!!!!)

Cheers,

blight

The Smog laws here are garbage. I don't care what you say. They put far too much burden on the individual, especially when their vehicle doesn't pass. The state won't offer assistance unless you meet a list of criteria either, and their "parts locater" service is a printout of local junkyards.

BTW, not everyone wants to get more power out of their vehicle. Most people just want to drive the thing to work.

My '87 Ramcharger failed Smog with a brand new, completely stock engine.
I had to fabricate new secondary air injection tubes because the originals failed, and those parts aren't made for my truck anymore, at least they weren't then.
The inspector noticed they weren't stock, labeled them "tampered" and it wouldn't pass until I either swapped in NOS parts (as if) or Used parts that may or may not work.
It passed the sniffer 100% proving my modification worked. The BAR wouldn't ref it because emissions systems can't be modified under any circumstance, so they were of no help. The state offered to purchase it for $500, about $2000 below fair market value.

Out of spite I re-titled it OHV and deactivated the Smog crap. My reg fees dropped down to $17 a year, and now I tow it to the forest and tear up nature. I'm not getting rid of a perfectly good vehicle because it doesn't "look like it runs clean".

As a mechanic, I CONSTANTLY saw cars that ran perfectly clean, fail because of incorrect gas caps (replaced when left at gas stations), wrong emissions equipment (3-way catalyst on car originally equipped with a 2-way), dirty engine compartments & air filters, missing CARB E.O. stickers (supplied with K&N air filters), all sorts of dumb ****.

The dealership I used to work at used to take trade-ins that had check engine lights on, clear them, Smog them, then sell them to wholesalers.

If you live in an exempt county you don't have to smog your vehicle. San Bernardino county used to be exempt, but I think that's changed. Tuolumne county is exempt last I heard, there are more I'm sure; my point is, if the ENTIRE state doesn't enforce the law, why is there one? That's like letting people break the speed limit on certain roads.

Lastly, CA is the strictest in the Union, by far. Wyoming doesn't emissions test vehicles older than 10 years. CA won't test anything 1975 or older, with no rolling exemption. So if your Grandpa wants you to get his 1976 Cougar on the road again- it'll cost you a fortune. But if it was a 1975, head on down to the DMV and pay the fees even though the cars are mechanically IDENTICAL. What's the point of being so strict if the folks in Nevada could care less?

Smog is a joke.
If that isn't proof Smog doesn't work, I don't know what is.

Motorcycles are on the chopping block next. Just wait.
Sorry for my rant. I'm off my soapbox now...

Ride it till 7500 miles and register

I have some friends who moved to Republik of Kalifornia from Texas. Their car was Texas registered with less than 7500 miles. Ran into the Dumb*** Motor Vehicle dept "catch 22" like you did. They just drove the car with Texas registration for four years. By then, it was well over 7500 miles and they had no problem reregistering it in Kalifornia. Rx, don't break any vehicle laws, that is what initiated the Kalifornia reregistration.
