'05 Thruxton (black)

Picked up my new Thrux 2 days ago after dreaming of the hruxton since they first came out. *****, you cant wipe the grin off my face. Had ridden the Bonneville and was not that impressed with the ride. Been waiting to get a test ride on a Thrux and it finally happened, so bought one.

I have never felt more in control of a motorcycle, just point, wind on and go , wow!! Hangin out to get the new pipes on.

After the last 5 years on a the ol R65, commuting has really become the best part of the day.

Modifications: VStar mirrors. VStar headlight visor. AIS removed. 19T countershaft sprocket installed.

Rider: 5'10" - 225lbs. - 45years

Problems/Resolutions: None so far.

Review: Are you kidding? I LOVE this frickin' thing. My wrists are killing me, my elbows hurt and my neck hurts, I complain mightily to the missus, I complain as I'm getting back on for another ride. There are a couple of things that bug me, the loose clocks for one, the location for the AI inlets for another (right in front of the spark plugs), pffft. Oh, and don't overtighten the gas cap, you'll need six men and a boy to get it loose (embarrassing at a gas station). However, the bike runs great, looks great, and handles beautifully. Don't be afraid to whack the throttle open and let the revs run, jeez I sometimes wonder if it has a rev limiter, it just wants to go. Next to sex........I like my Thruxton best! All-in-all, the best bang for the buck in the motorcycling world, IMHO. Heck even the cop that pulled me for speeding was so impressed with the looks of the bike, he decided NOT to give me a ticket.

At 3250kms I switched from dino oil to Mobil MX4T 10W40 synthetic, WOW what an improvement. I found gear changes somewhat clunky and noisey, especially from 1st to 2nd, when the bike had the dino oil. With the synth. oil the shifts are considerably smoother and quieter. While I was at it, I removed the AI and installed some NGK Iridium plugs. I LOVE this bike.

After installing the 19T countershaft sprocket I find the shift from first to second to be even smoother. The extra tooth on the front sprocket has dropped the engine speed down about 500rpm.

have had my Thuxton for 3 weeks now. new bike.
its a great bike, runs strong,
rode it home new from the dealer that was 186mile from my house .
up and down from 50 to 65mph new and all
got 35mpg but had a strong head wind 35-45mph
only thing you've got to watch is your turn signals
they don't tune off for you, gives the cops something to do
.
put a sticker down on the clocks to remind you to turn them off.
was riding it to work but it was drawing to much attention so went back to riding my Enfield to work
have done nothing to the bike as of now, keeping it stock.
I'm 6'4 260lbs
handles great the British know how to build them.

God Bless The Queen Mom or something like that !

I am thinking of adding the fly screen to the Thruxton.

Can anyone comment on their before and after experience.

Thank you!

Mileage: 8803 (bought it used with 8658 on the clock)
Bought used in Feb of 2006.
Overall Rating: 9/10

Modifications completed: Triumph off road pipes(came on the bike), AI removal, Longer shifter and rear brake pedals made and installed, Heli-bars added.

Modifications Planned: Bella Corse Cafe Racer Fairing, ignition switch relocated, air-box removal, and maybe re-pad the seat.

My Specs: 6'1" 240lbs <-- Yes I need to loose some weight, Age 43 (god I am that old already)

General Thoughts:

Except for having to make longer shifter and brake level -- I am cleaning them up, they work fine, will post pictures when I am done.

I have noticed that my knees get a little cramped after riding for a while, but this is my first bike I have had in 15 years.
I am spending some more time at the gym and that is helping -- knew I just needed some motivation to work out. Also, the seat is a little stiff and after about 50 miles, my behind starts to tell me -- maybe need to get it re-padded.

It is a joy to ride, I have gotten asked "what year is it?" when I say 2004, they reply is often: "NO, not when you started to restore it, but what year is the bike" The bike handles very well, has been very reliable, has plenty of power (but not crazy power like some of the modern sport bikes). I have back problems and while I have heard that the Heli-bars ruin the look, they sure make it easy on my back.

I wish the bike had an option for cast wheels -- I know that is not period correct, but I am not a fan of tube tires -- so far, however, they have been great.

This is a great bike for a beginner, someone that has been away from riding for a while, or a veteran ride. While not crazy fast (having more power than most people can handle) or having freaky race suspension (that maybe 3% of the riders on the street can use) it is a good solid, fun bike. Set up correctly, you can even take trips -- wouldn't suggest riding 2 up.

So I do like it? I can not get the $hit eating grin off my face every time I ride it. I go out in the garage and look at and smile -- still not believing I own it. It will be a cold day before I part with this baby.

If you havent got one yet, you dont know what you are missing -- all the fun of a classic Triumph Cafe, and all the reliablity of modern bike -- how could you not like it.

I like the thruxton especially the way the black one looks.

Off hand some minor annoyances...

The speedometer gives a false reading and that kind of sucks. It normally reads higher, and in my experience about 10mph higher.

Power in general is a little low for a 900 I feel.

The mirrors suck. Ducati's sport classic atleast has proper mirrors, a nice tough on thier part.

No question it is a great bike for the price.

Rating, it is what I expected

Modifications, tank pads, center stand, chrome chain guard, chrome valve covers, gators, works perf. shocks, predator exhaust, CVR bar end mirrors, Corbin seat, remove AI, fly screen. black fenders
6 feet and 185 pounds.

I feel the bike is exactly what I thought it would be; an HONEST bike. The power is quite down. So what. I still get past these sport bikes when I want. It transitions from left to right very well and does not do anything weird. I will at some time add a steering dampener and do some fork work as this is still the weak link that I need to address. I find the breaks to work OK. however, i haven't pushed them to the limit yet and i think a future mod will be a 6 piston caliber.
Now the intangibles; I have 7 bikes in my garage. I find that i just have to keep starring at the Thruxton. All my other sport bikes have liquid cooling and fairings and there is nothing to look at. When I ride it I don't need to go fast. I am having just as much fun taking it easier; although it will go should I want to.
I have always liked Triumph, and have never been willing to put up with the BS of owning a bike that leaked oil by design and parts would keep falling off. I loved their history and handling and now the Thruxton gives me the opportunity to experience a true classic British bike. And yes the cool factor is quite obvious.

Hai,

2004, ,
Black.
4000 miles.
GREATTTT

Modifications: Ai removed, Dynojet and Triumph aftermarket-exhaust.
Rearfender elemenation-kit, Black front-fender.

Dunlop Arrowmax fitted.

Great bike, I used to ride faster and more powerfull naked bikes, such as xjr 1200 and Triump T509 and ducati Monster 900, but this is soooo relaxed AND at the same time FUN. I am really smiling a lot.

Question: Like to know if the predators do make more sound thean the triump aftermarket pipes, need some more sound, still..
And how is the corbin seat compared to the original? I think for longer rides, the original is quit oncomfortabel.

Job Amsterdam

1 problem, got a bumpy feeling when riding 70-90 km/ph, head is good, tyre is good, or seems good, replaced the rim, because the factory rim has a welding place where it is rather flat, but I still have the same feel.
Does any of you know any other solutions (and I would very much like to know the cause!) I also fiddled whith the front shock positions, but htis makes no difference..
:???:
