Problems / Resolutions

Owner Review: Will be changing to TORs and Uni hopefully this weekend so will post review and carb settings later.

Could I suggest that people that have changed exhaust, filter, air box, etc.... add thier carb settings to the mods list as there are so many settings questions on the forums.

Something like this maybe

Main jet / Pilot jet / shims / Pilot screw / Air hole / If tested on Dyno

eg. 125/40/1/2.5 turns/3mm/Yes

Oh... if we adopt this idea could you add the....

Main jet / Pilot jet / shims / Pilot screw / Air hole / If tested on Dyno

bit to your thread CYNCRZR so people entering the thread know what we are talking about ?

05 Thruxton (black) purchased Nov 05
8000k's to date
fitted Stayintunes removed AI & rejet

one word to describe? Luvit!!!!!

G'day peoples

as above this bike is fantastic! Good looks, good midrange power and good to ride!

the only downside to this bike as it as a pain in the a** literally! did a round trip from Perth to Geraldton over a weekend (approx 950km's) and was my a** sore but enjoyed every minute of it. for long trips will be considering tank bag (to lay on) and saddle bags to store gear as a bit hard on the shoulders. Looking to get to Phillip Island next year for the 40th and want to be well set up. also considering changing the front sproket to 19 tooth so not working so hard on long runs.

Each bike has it own merits but as far as this one goes it is well worth every penny and quite happy to spruik about it to anyone who will listen!

all i can say is enjoy and see you on the road

6300 miles

Modifications
Helibars, generic glasspack mufflers, AI removal, rejetted carb, uni filter, allen head carb bolts, galfer green brake pads, centerstand
(stock pilot/ 125 main/ 1 shim under needle/ 3 turns out on the screws)

I've had this bike about a year, and pretty much love it. It leaves me wanting a little more on the performance end, but it is still a blast to ride, once you get used to its limitations. Not necessarily in terms of power, but agility. It is a heavy bike for it's size, and it needs a twin disk brake, because the brakes feel wooden. Also, under heavy braking, the forks twist. I think a twin disk would solve both problems of weakness and twisting. All in all, a fun bike, and pretty reliable. You can't find a thing wrong with the looks (well that brake reservior is very ugly). My modifications have mostly centered on exhaust/intake, oddly enough. I will be saving cash for some new shocks, fork springs, and a six piston caliper this winter. But for now, I'll just ride it and enjoy it.

Year 2004
Colour (yep thats how we spell it) Black
Km's 36,000, (22,800 m)
Overall rating - In the words of a mate "Best yet mate, you win"
165cm's, 83kg's
Mods - Staintune mufflers, 19 tooth front sprocket, lots a stone chips on cases & forks (hard to get em just right), AI tubes blocked using marbles found on my driveway, result of neighbor trying to sort the magpies out with a slingshot.

Probs - Broken spoke in rear wheel at 20,000km's, replaced spoke under warranty, second broken spoke at 32,000, replaced complete wheel under warranty, dealer said that this had not happened to anyone else.
Had a large lump of paint come off the frame with the side cover, repaired under warranty, can't even see where it was.
Had a few tank slappers when i first got it, but hasn't happened for a while, mighta got used to it.

I bought the bike before any were in the country, so basically fell in love with the picture in the brochure, mates have speed masters, america's, rockets, sprints & all look at the Thruxton like its an alien (not many jap sports bikes in the mix) & all say it must be uncomfortable. I tell em yeah (yes I lie) & so far none have wanted to ride it (fools).
I rode it this time last year from Newcastle to Adelaide (1500k's, get the atlas out you blokes!!) in 2 days & whilst riding it thought it was hurting (9 hour days) & that it would take days to get over, off the bike for 2 beers & no pain, no stiffness, just smiles.
If you've rode one & thought it hurt, you do get used to it, I have ridden mine nearly every day since I got it & love it.
I haven't done too many mods cause we have a bloke around here whose parents used to beat him up, so he joined the police, in between worrying about the size of his penis, he pulls over bikes & goes over em till he has enough defects to cancel your registration. Nice bloke.

To sum up, great bike if you know what you want, can mix it with the mid range sport bikes but not the biggies, on rails around the corners & a great everyday bike.

Good riding

Owner Review:

Just bought the Thruxton about 2 months ago, so far very impressed. I also have a Harley 1200 Roadster, Suzuki GSX750 and Aprilia Tuono125. Bought the Thruxton cause I've always wanted a British twin, but didn't like the oil leaks - the Thruxton was perfect.

The engine braking is a bit extreme, even with the slightly more open TOR's. The Unifilter may help on this count, don't know yet. Gearing is a bit off and am looking forward to getting the new front sprocket - I ALWAYS look for 6th gear.

All in all, great bike, well made and fun to ride - it's a keeper.

Cheers,

Brett

Owner Stats: 38 years old, 200 lbs, 5'10"

Current mods: Staintunes, A/I removal, gaiters, Napoleon bar end mirrors, knee pads, waffle badges, no tool bolts on seat, side covers.

Impending Mods: Fender removal, fly screen, Air box elimination, custom paint, 19 tooth front sprocket (?)

I've now had my Thruxton for 3 weeks and absolutely love it. I bought it with 2,222 miles on it. The previous owner bought it in May, put 1,000 miles and the staintunes, mirrors, knee pads, gaiters and badges on it. Almost all of which I was planning to do to a brand new one. The sales and service guys at Motoprimo (MN) put the remaining mileage on the bike after the original owner traded it in for a Speed Triple. Talking with the service guys about the owner and the way he rode and kept the bike it was the only way to go - there were a couple of teary-eyed techs when I rode it out of there.

This is my first bike of my own and I don't have a ton of riding experience. I've wanted a Triumph Bonneville since I was a kid and it took over 20 years but I've finally have her. I tested a T-100 before riding a stock Thruxton and no decision was ever easier. The Thruxton was the only way to go.

After three weeks and over 1,100 miles (didn't get to ride at all last weekend) commuting everyday, riding along the river and lakes - touring WI on the weekends I have grown to love this bike more everyday. At first I was concerned about the riding position and a little soreness in my wrists after a full day of town and city riding but that has completely disappeared and the satisfaction of riding this beautiful machine has increased. She gets looks wherever she goes and I'm constantly answering questions about her.

My riding is improving by the day and I think the Thruxton is a perfect bike to (almost) begin on as it has the power and handling to allow you to progress and rewards practice and good technique. I've never wanted a super-sport bike or repli-racer and 70 + bhp is fine by me - I've topped 115 on the speedo (around 109 actual I believe) and that's just about all I need (a little bit more would be fine) as I don't plan on riding 150mph any time soon.

Overall I think the Thruxton is perfect - at least for me, and that's what counts ain't it?

WHAT YEAR IS IT?

As, i bought this bike from an interstate dealer, I had to have an ID check on the bike by the Dept of Transport. Even the guy there, who has probably checked hundreds of bikes, asked what year it is and how long did it take to restore!! before he saw the 2006 compliance plate.
Then rode it for 47 kilometres so far , a few stops here and there, and have already been asked twice " what year is it?"

Year 2005 (purchased new 12/05)

Color - Yelow

Miles - 5500 (heck, I've three bikes and this is upstate NY!)

Overall rating - Big Fun

Rider - 6'1", 225#

Mods - Helibars, Bar end mirrors, Cafe 1/4 fairing with upper deflector screen hand fabricated (hated the little overpriced fly screen it came with - useless), major internal mods to stock mufflers (could not get by the Triumph ransom for the TOR's), snorkle removed, UNI installed and inlet to air box matched to inlet to filter, AI removed, HH brake bads, Bonneville king/queen seat (replace stock 2x10 cleverly disguised as a seat), Renntec rack modified with soft luggage standoffs welded in, Cortec soft bags, Givi tail hard luggage, Hagon rear shocks (13.5" vs stock 14.3", got rid of every bit of the dang wiggles the bike came with), took kit. 19t front sprocket.

To Do - Forks

Carb Jetting - stock pilots, stock mix screw setting, 135 mains, 1 needle shim, 3.175mm slide port.

Probs - No failures. Modifications have cured most all my issues with the stock design. Pipes are blue past the second bend despite AI removal, my only remaining factory provided ***** with this machine. Maybe if I slowed down a little...........

I fell in love with this bike when I first saw it. The RED initially grabbed me, but I found my price on a yellow and it has grown on me.

I just returned from a twisties trip in Southwest Wisconsin (one of the great riding secrets in this country). From 20mph switchbacks at 60+ to 45mph sweepers at tripples the bike behaved beautifully. Riding partners included an FJ and a 929RR. I was easily able to hang with these guys until big horsepower could be used, which was not often where we were riding. Never touched down a peg, but wore the chicken strips on the tires pretty good.

Throughout this forum the soft spots of this bike are picked apart, but I have to say with a little bit of ingenuity and a grand to invest one can make a heck of a playtoy out of this machine. I look forward to next season with the forks reworked.

This is my 30th motorcycle over 32 years of riding and 600,000+ miles and it has a bigger grin factor than most all of them, possibly a tie with my Ducati 900SS (however I got rid of that one b4 it got rid of me - it had mind control and caused me to go stupid every time I threw a leg over).

Year: 2004

Color: Black

Mileage: 2300

Overall Rating: Great bike. I can't say enough about it's general streetability, fabulous looks, and great all-around performance. Hey - it's not a thoroughbred race bike, but I didn't want one of those anyway. This is the second Thruxton that I have owned. The first one, a red 2004, was totalled in an automobile induced T-bone accident, so I had the choice of replacing it with whatever I wanted. I chose another Thruxton.

Modifications: CRC Bar-end mirrors, Specialty Spares TT pipes, Hagon shocks, clutch lifter dress up, Oil temp gauge.

Owner Height/Weight: 5’11”/185

Owner Review: Great classic look. A real attention getter. I prefer a clip on - back set geometry when riding over the kick-back cruiser seating so the Thruxton is made for me. I spent 4 hours on a long trip recently and the seating arrangement and bars were very gentle on my old, damaged back. The range is a little short, but it doesn't hurt to stop every 125 - 130 miles and stretch anyway. The bike was fairly robust, but the TT pipes made a huge improvement in overall perfromance (make sure you can tolerate the sound level before you opt for the TT pipes). My only complaint (and it is nothing really) is that I can't catch the kickstand extension bar with my foot when I am sitting on the bike so I have to reach down and extend it with my hand (OK - I'm whining a little).

If you're looking for a classic ride, buy a Thruxton! I am 6'2, 190 lbs and fit perfectly in the semi-laid out position this cafe racer demands. Concerns one may have about sore backs, etc should NOT enter your mind. This is a very comfortable ride. In reading several rider reviews, I've noticed recommendations for aftermarket changes. My assessment is that these are the result of every performance rider's desire to "tinker". Don't get me wrong, I like to change things up as well to "fine-tune" my ride, but I am making the point that nothing NEEDS to be done to this bike. It's a fabulous ride, right off the dealer floor............and a real head turner. Here in East Texas, Harley's dominate the landscape. It's very gratifying that at every stop I make, the Harley riders quickly gather to compliment the classic and powerful lines of my racer. In short - you can't have my bike, not now, not ever.......get your own! 8-)

Lastly, I strongly recommend Fox Creek V1.8 Cafe Racer leathers, Davida Classic Helmet and French Aviator Goggles. They are all specifically designed for the cafe racer's riding position, GREATLY adding to rider comfort. Semper Fi!
