Thruxton R Fuel Filler Cap Trick

The first few times I filled up my Thruxton R, I struggled with what to do with the filler cap. With the key in it, it wants to roll around. Then I found the perfect place. The key holds it there securely.

Sorry if I sound like a broken record, but that reversed Monza cap cover just sickens me. I mean... you have to open the outer cover towards the rider forcing them to reach around the open cover and then, unscrew the tiny recessed cap. Can it be more inconvenient?

If there any easy way to remove the outer flip-open cover from the tank? Please don't tell me it's pressed-on or worse, bonded. I see what looks as a cir-clip.

I know there is an indentation in the tank for the cover's hinge, but I'm hoping an aftermarket Monza Cap will screw into the bung and sit correctly on the new Thruxton tank.

Well, I get off my bike to fill up because I want the level to be right when the bike is on its side stand. The position of the flip-cap does not interfere or give me a second thought while filling from the side of the bike.

Plus - I usually need a break for a minute or two from sitting on the bike.

And as others have said I've had a couple of vintage bikes with monza caps and this is how they were all oriented.

I looked at quite a few Monza caps when building the tank for my Special. I ended up placing them (oil and fuel) same way round as Triumph has this new Thruxton. On Vintage race bikes such as the Manx, G50, 7r the pivot is at the rear and latch at front as it is on the new Thruxton. So for those who want the cap to appear in a traditional style, Triumph have it right way round.
I found the Triumph monza cap setup awkward for a few fillups, now it's automatic. Having a good location to place the fuel plug will make it even easier.

Even though my complaints about the filler cap inadvertently led to the Bitching about the Thruxton thread, I have certainly come to a place where getting gas into my tank has become a simple, one-glove-off affair. I'm pretty often wrong about stuff at first and regret making a deal about it. I currently put the cap between the top clamp and the clocks, but will try the 'maybe more secure' placement with the key down. It might not fit as I have a tiny keyring holding one of my wife's rings to the key as she believes the turquoise will keep me safe (her PhD is in the history of science... not science ; -)

Even though I love the bike more and more every day and have completely gotten over the 'difficulty' of removing the cap, I still think this Yamaha design from the day was so easy. Turn the key and lift - never rolls under the car next to you...

Maybe its a fashion faux pas but I just take mine and put it right side up in the empty space between my top triple and gauges. It never has any fuel on it and it fits there and doesn't move.
I am not too sure what Triumph thought we would do with it

You guys crack me up bitching about the filler cap...

What does the rest of the world do with a twist-off gas cap on a motorcycle? Certainly this is not that much of a calamity or disaster :surprise: Set the cap anywhere you want or can. Me, I usually take of gloves, lay on seat and then set the cap on that.

However, I do think Triumph missed a design opportunity here. I don't understand why they went with a key operated filler cap in the first place? Would have been much better to put a real Monza cap on there vs. this fake one that covers a typical plastic cap. Do you really need a locking gas cap?

This has been covered in the "bitchin' about the Thruxton" thread but the locking cap prevents some knucklehead from stealing your gas and/or dumping something in the tank.

Most city dwellers don't have the luxury of a garage so I actually appreciate the locking cap.

A Vincent clubmate got into a nasty argument with an obnoxious and insulting Harley owner when we stopped for lunch/drinks at a bar in California a couple of years ago. The Harley owner left, then we left, then Dan's bike started to run badly as did one of the other bikes in our group. We eventually found the cause, dirt in the Carbs. Cleaned it out and more dirt came thru. Finally dumped the tanks out and two handfuls of sand/gravel came out of each!

The Locking gas cap is a nice touch from Triumph, thank you. I'll happily go thru the simple routine to fill up.

OK gas (or petrol) capers....

I want to go there with my Thruxton. As someone mentioned, I still lament my Yamaha Monza locking gas cap from 30 plus years ago on an XS-750E triple. Once my suspension is set, could be the next project.

So what is on the market for a Monza style locking cap to fit a 2013 Thruxton gas tank? If I start looking now, may be I'll get it for Christmas : ))

Posted this back in March and still engaged.
LF

Took my cap to a lock smith this morning. He was able to use his pick to make it permanently engaged. Kind of like picking a lock in reverse. Me explaining what I wanted took longer than him doing it. Maybe all of two minutes. Does not freewheel any more - No key required now.

If you don't like the Monza cap being the way round it is, just take it off and reverse it. It just unclips if you lift out the plastic inner ring.
Re the inner cap locking, there's an awful lot of complaining about such a little thing. I've had several cars with the same system, and never felt the need to replace it with a knurled black painted gold titanium recessed glove-friendly cap, but perhaps I'm too focused on riding the bike... :)

Who needs a locking cap? Switched my T120 cap for a spare 2005 old-style, looks better, easy to lay upside down on the seat :)
