Work has begun!

With the good Autumn weather we've been having here in the UK it's taken me a while to get started on my Thruxton project but, here goes. Apart from stripping the bike a little and polishing a lot of parts I've not done much so far. Been discussing tanks with John Williams at The Tank Shop but so far I've not been too crazy about the one's he's built. We've agreed that the best way forward is for me to make a 'master' out of polystyrene and he'll copy it sooo it's out with the 2" insulation and electric carving knife. I should have a shape I like after the weekend so I'll post pics then. I'm going for a sort of cross between the Mecatwin tank and an original Lyta but about 10% bigger overall. The Thrux is a bigger bike than the original Bonnie and needs a tank in proportion. I'm going for a classic '50s cafe racer look so watch this space to see how close I get!

Cheers Johnny

Hi

Sounds good – I know what you mean; I also fancy an alloy tank but haven’t seen one I like either.

Keep posting as you progress with your project.

Where are you in UK?

Cumbria, not far from Keef. And not too far from John Williams in Dumfries which is handy.

BSA Goldstar Tank

For me, this has always been the "perfect" tank...

Well after a couple of days hacking up expanded polystyrene here's what I've got. Off to see John Williams again on Thursday so we'll see what he can do with it.

Nice looking mock up. Have any guesstements on gal/litre capacity? I, too am looking for another tank but with a little more capacity. Keep us informed!

I reckon about 3 to 3 1/2 gallons. I'll just have to wait and see. Comparing it with the standard tank it's got to be quite a bit bigger.

Beautiful Tank ... but John may never get it to ya

I think that is a perfect style! I have been waiting for a sprint tank from John Williams for over a year now. I cabled him 530 pounds last December. It was promised in three weeks. This is now the second time he has said that he sent it, but it never arrived nor could he manage to send me shipping info. I would watch it, John has not followed through for me. Bruce

PS. Please ask him about my tank if you see him.

Not the style you are want, but this was supplied by Baker Tanks in Wales at £350.00 delivered. Delivery took about 20 weeks.

I know some overseas customers have had problems with John. I don't think there's any malice in it, he's just pretty disorganised. He will come through eventually but I'd ignore the claim that turnaround time is 10 weeks. Thankfully he's only about an hour away from me so I can gently hassle him and mine should be ready this week. I'll keep you posted.
